5 Dead, Over 40 Injured After Car Drives Into Christmas Parade in Wisconsin: Police

According to police reports, in a Christmas parade in Waukesha, a suburb of Milwaukee, a minimum of five people have succumbed to death as well as over 40 are wounded following an SUV bumped into children and adults taking part.

According to Police, near around 4.39 pm, the SUV smashed at high speed into band members and cheerleaders who were marching four abreast in close formation, smashing several people and scattering the crowd before driving on.

The Incident Related to Terrorism?

The local police chief, Dan Thompson, said that his department had one suspect taken into custody and seized the car as well. He stated that he didn’t have any idea if the incident has any relation to terrorism.

The City of Waukesha shared on its Twitter and Facebook handle “At this time, we can confirm that 5 people are deceased and over 40 are injured. However, these numbers may change as we collect additional information.”

The Hospital Claimed It Received 15 Patients

Previously, the officials had said that 11 adults and 12 children were rushed to local hospitals whereas the Children’s Wisconsin hospital claimed that it had got 15 patients adding that there were no casualties found among those.

Video clips from the city’s parade live stream and phone clips from those who were present there, presented a red SUV coming through breaking all barriers and speeding into the roadway where the parade was being held.

The Waukesha mayor, Shawn Reilly, called the tragic event a “horrible and senseless act.”

Mr. Thomson also signified it as a “very tragic incident, very chaotic.” He stated that during the incident, “an officer discharged his weapon at the suspect vehicle to try to stop the vehicle,” adding that no spectators were injured due to weapon discharge.

Angelito Tenorio, a local said that “We saw an SUV… just put the pedal to the metal and just zooming full speed along the parade route. And then we heard a loud bang, and just deafening cries and screams from people who were struck by the vehicle.”

Another witness, Corey Montiho, whose daughter was smashed by the SUV, said that “there were pom-poms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere.

I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter”. Further adding “My family is safe but many are not. I held one little girl’s head in my hand, she was seizing and she was bleeding out of her ears. I held her mother as she collapsed. Please pray.”

Parade in Wisconsin

25 years old Tom Hickey, who marched at the end of the parade, stated that he had seen the red Ford Escape steadily moving towards the crowd and sounding the horn for people to get out of the way.

Mr. Hickey claimed that he believed that the driver was lost, but later watched him turn right onto the parade way, gun the engine and speed up into the crowd.

“Today our community faced horror and tragedy in what should have been a community celebration. My heart goes out to all those affected by this senseless act,” Mayor Reilly said.

The Wisconsin governor, Tony Evers, stated that he is praying for the city of Waukesha.

Along with the young children taking part in the parade, video clips, and spectators reports presented that the group called the “Milwaukee Dancing Grannies” was also smacked by the SUV. The local reports said that all members are in their 50s to mid-70s.

Group posted on their Facebook page that “Members of the group and volunteers were impacted and we are waiting for word on their conditions. Please keep the Grannies, all those injured, and all those who witnessed this horrible event in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Catholic Community of Waukesha also took to Facebook that several numbers of inhabitants were wounded and sent to the hospital. According to reports, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee said that among all those who were injured one is a Catholic priest “as well as multiple parishioners and Waukesha Catholic School children.”

The Emergency Alert Sent to People

An emergency alert to people’s smartphones by police following the incident, expecting to maintain the site clear whilst they investigated.

However, it was reported that following several streets being shut down by the police in downtown Waukesha, many attendees were still seen persisting in the site since they got to know about the tragic event that had been unveiled.

Over a dozen units from the fire department and police department were present on the scene along with the FBI and the ATF (the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) helping Waukesha police.

As per the police department’s Facebook page, a family reunification location was established at the Metro Transit Center by Bank Street.

The representative of parts of Waukesha, Democrat Sara Rodriguez, was marching in the parade with the Waukesha County Democrats. She said that “I didn’t directly witness the car coming through — we had finished the parade route and so it came after when we were done.”

Adding further “People were running and screaming and moving out of the way. … My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who’ve been injured.”
