Rockstar Games hasn’t officially announced GTA 6 but there have been a lot of rumors circulating the title for years now, along with expected leaks and more about the story, setting, features, and other elements of the game.
According to a Kotaku report, as of April 2020, “a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” is early in development. That report also stated that we can hope to see a smaller release, with the game expanded through updates in the manner of an MMO or GTA Online.
The timing of development supposing the game to be a PS5 and Xbox Series X title is sure, and the launch of updated GTA 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X in March 2022 recommends we could be waiting quite some time for a new GTA title.
Here are the rumors that are circulating about GTA 6 so far.
When Will GTA 6 Be Released?
If Rockstar announces GTA 6 following the release day of Red Dead Redemption 2 (October 26, 2018, then based on delays between console GTA announcements and launch, we’d be waiting nearly 22 months, hence August 2020.
Rockstar didn’t do that. So, all we have to go on is a word that GTA 6 was “early in development” as of April 2020. That makes it tough to forecast any kind of release window.
The recent gossip is that the GTA 6 release date will be anytime in 2025. That arrives with the tip that the game is set in a modern-day version of Vice City, that will extend and alter over time.
That continues contradictory with earlier rumors that recommended GTA 6 could roll out in October 2023 and be set in Miami.
What Will the Gta 6 Setting Be? Here Are All the Rumors
There have been several rumors regarding possible GTA 6 location spots, along with moving back to Vice City or being set around the US.
The recent rumors that came out in June last year recommended that the GTA 6 will be set in a modern-day recreation of Vice City.
Back in March 2021, a tipster with a great track record, Tom Henderson said that GTA 6 setting will be in the modern-day. When questioned by someone on Twitter, Henderson retweeted their question and said “It’s not set in the 1980s and is modern”.
In 2020, a massive GTA 6 leak was revealed through Reddit. User JackOLantern1982 discovered a total of 23 updates regarding Rockstar’s forthcoming game.
Along with confirming that it’s in development, they call that its codename is Project Americas since the game will extend across several countries, Brazil, a fictional city based on Rio de Janeiro, and Vice City in the US.
The report recommended that the associated narrative would be intensely inspired by Netflix’s Narcos.
The leak recommended that you’ll be establishing your drug empire with the use of a mechanic like Vice City Stories, but bigger than GTA Online.
The function of your vehicle will be similar to the horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, enabling you to keep your equipment in the trunk, instead of stored on your character.
The leak suggests that the game setting will be in the 1970 – the 80s, with buildings altering by time, and the weather being another intense focus.
Another possible leak on Fireden recommends GTA 6 will be set in a modern-day Liberty City, with the starting of the game similar to the Television show, The Wire.
It does recommend that it’s also established on a drug ring, turning that a constant theme of all the leaks.
The co-founder of Rockstar, Dan Houser stated the back in September 2013 during an interview with Polygon:
“At the moment, it feels like GTA’s DNA is contemporary-ish, American-ish, English-speaking-ish, because that’s what it has been… but that doesn’t necessarily limit it to those, that’s just what we’ve done so far.”
This resulted in many speculations that GTA may be seeking outside inspiration, or even getting back to the UK. Although, Houser also stated that GTA wouldn’t be back in London during an interview with The Guardian in the same month:
Houser said “I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then,” adding “These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don’t know if it would be a GTA game.
I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have the UK bent to them – I just don’t think it would be a GTA necessarily.”
As per March 2016 report, Rockstar went to the Japanese capital as a reference trip for a game entitled GTA: Tokyo multiple years earlier.
Ultimately, the concept for the game was withdrawn, but before that, the studio met with locals, captured pictures, and sought to have a good feel for the city before getting on that particular gaming journey.
The source said that Rockstar was “serious” regarding a game with a Japanese setting, and even continued as far as to trademark the names GTA: Tokyo, GTA: Bogota, and also, mysteriously, GTA: Sin City in 2003. That was across the time of GTA 3 and Vice City, but the road system was sighted as an issue and was only one of the reasons for which the concept was ultimately dropped.
The GTA 6 rumors are pretty far-reaching right now like rumors of setting GTA games in the following locations:
- Liberty City – GTA 3, GTA 4, Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony
- Vice City – GTA Vice City
- San Andreas / Los Santos – GTA: San Andreas, GTA 5
What Will the Gta 6 Story Be?
Coming to the GTA 6 story, there are a lot of rumors in that section as well, from several heroes to a single male hero.
As per leak by Reddit in 2020 that suggested it would be set in the 1970s/80s and feature a single, male protagonist, who’s an up-and-coming drug lord-wannabe named “Ricardo”. Another significant character named “Kacey” is a part of the story.
This leak also claims that you’ll begin as a grunt who is involved in the smuggling of cocaine from Vice City to the new largely South American area before building contacts with long-time drug lords and progressing up, with the story surrounding several cities.
