The Incident With the Border Patrol During Mayorkas’ Visit Is the Latest in a Series of Escalating Tensions With the Biden Administration

The latest example of tensions between Border Patrol officers and the Biden administration, whose policies many agents say prevent them from keeping the border safe, is a disagreement between agents and their boss during a visit by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

As Mayorkas visited Laredo, Texas, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz was embroiled in a contentious back-and-forth with agents. Ortiz admitted that “morale is at an all-time low” in a video given by a Border Patrol source.

With Mayorkas present, Ortiz acknowledged the agents’ dissatisfaction.

“I understand,” Ortiz stated. “You’re irritated when you get to work. You’re disappointed because you didn’t obtain the expected result. This does not imply that you have given up.”

Other agents added, “You keep allowing criminal immigrants into the nation,” as the conversation progressed.

Ortiz questioned the agents, “Are you still not pleased with the answers you’re getting?” “Why are you guys so preoccupied with semantics?… I’ve been doing this job for as long as you’ve been doing it.”

“That’s the issue, chief,” said one of the agents. “To allow evil to triumph, decent men must do nothing. That’s precisely what’s going on here. Nothing is being done by good folks. You’re permitting illegal immigrants to be dumped in neighborhoods.”

Reactions Upon the Video

Mayorkas’ predecessor was taken aback by the footage, calling the encounter “extraordinary.”

On “Cavuto Live,” former acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf remarked, “I’ve never seen anything like that where Border Patrol officers are pushing back so forcefully on their leadership.”

“And I believe what is most surprising about that footage is that, even though the DHS secretary is standing right there in the backdrop, he does not take action. He doesn’t respond to any of the Border Patrol agents’ concerns.

There isn’t any vision, “he stated. “There is no one in charge. He merely stands to the side because he knows he won’t be able to talk to these agents or explain what’s going on at the border due to the administration’s policy.”

Background of the Leaked Video

The encounter took place a day after Townhall got recordings of Mayorkas’ statements to Yuma sector agents. One agent allegedly turned his back on the secretary after accusing him of interfering with their work.

Another agent allegedly challenged Mayorkas on how the Biden administration’s rules prevent agents from patrolling the border. At the same time, another claimed that Yuma was better under President Donald Trump because “everyone was doing their duties.”

“I understand that the Trump administration’s policies are unpopular with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, but that’s the truth, and let’s see what we can accomplish within that context,” Mayorkas said.

“You may abandon me, but I won’t turn my back on you,” Mayorkas reportedly told the agent who turned his back on him.

Mayorkas had urged candid dialogue. The objective of his travel was to hear from agents unfiltered. According to a DHS spokesman, he had already had several positive exchanges during his three-day tour to the area.

“Border Patrol agents are committed to their task and display incredible bravery and life-saving abilities while on the job. Secretary Mayorkas values openness in these discussions and values and respects the views of every member of the CBP staff “they said

Previously Leaked Audio

It wasn’t the first-time audio from Mayorkas’ private talks with the men and women who work at the forefront of the border issue had been released.

Mayorkas said in an audio recording leaked in August that the border situation was “unsustainable” and that “we’re going to lose” if “borders are the first line of defense.”

“I was down in Mexico a few of days ago, and I said look, if our borders are our first line of defense, we’re going to lose, and this is unsustainable,” Mayorkas said Thursday, according to the recording. “We can’t go on like this, our field personnel can’t go on like this, and our system isn’t designed for it.”

Agents communicated their frustration to the DHS head at that moment.

One agent told Mayorkas, “Those of us who have been around here long enough… we don’t need to reinvent the wheel.” “This has happened before. We’ve figured out how to turn it off. Unlawful entrance must be made illegal.”

When Mayorkas fanned a story that border officers on horseback “whipped” Haitian migrants a month later in September, he was unlikely to ingratiate himself with agents, a charge that was immediately discredited.

What Does Mayorkas Have to Say?

Unlike President Biden, Mayorkas did not openly support the whipping story. Still, he did call the behavior “horrifying”. He said it “does not reflect who we are, who we strive to be for the integrity and values of our genuinely heroic troops in the Department of Homeland Security.”

“We realize those photos brought to mind the darkest aspects of our country’s continuing fight against structural racism,” he added.

An inquiry into the agents’ actions was also begun, which Mayorkas predicted would be completed swiftly. It is, however, still in progress.
