Netflix Unveils 2022 Film Slate With First Footage of ‘knives Out 2,’ ‘The Gray Man’

Perhaps you’ve been anticipating filmmaker Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel for the past two years. It may be Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas in “The Gray Man,” which piques your interest.

Maria Bakalova’s first feature since “Borat Subsequent Movie film” may have you reaching for the popcorn. Netflix will launch a cornucopia of entertainment alternatives in 2022, no matter what your tastes are.

2021 for Netflix

Netflix has announced its feature film lineup for this year, which includes 86 films, up from 70 last year. That’s far more than any other theatrical studio, and it’s a pipeline that competing streamers can’t match.

Whatever you think of Netflix’s stock price lately, they remain the gold standard that all other OTT providers are chasing, and they are extremely difficult to catch up to.

The Dwayne Johnson-Gal Gadot-Ryan Reynolds action caper Red Notice (364 million hours in its first 28 days) and Adam McKay’s environmental satire Don’t Look Up (359.8 million hours) with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, and others received record traffic for Netflix in 2021.

Well, there’s enough star power in the 2022 slate for Netflix to keep breaking their records, including Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2, for which the streamer paid $400 million including a third film, as we first reported; Joe and Anthony Russo’s espionage thriller The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, which represents the streamer’s continued expansion into franchises, an attempt at a 007-style series that cost upwards of $200 million.

Then there’s Eddie Murphy’s comeback to Netflix with Kenya Barris’ You People, and Jennifer Lopez’s action picture The Mother, which is part of her multi-year first-look contract with Netflix that includes feature films, TV series, and unscripted material.

Adam Sandler made Netflix his production hub eight years ago, a pact that was re-upped in 2020 for $250 million, and the comedian has two films coming out this year: Hustle, about a basketball scout, and Spaceman, starring Carey Mulligan.

Knives Out 2

Knives Out 1

The popular movie, which was released just before the epidemic shut down theatres for almost 18 months, grossed an astonishing $311.4 million worldwide, with both viewers and critics hailing it as “genuine” and “a brilliantly created and formed piece of entertainment.”

Knives Out 2

James Bond heartthrob Daniel Craig, who continues to play private detective Benoit Blanc, is the only remaining member of the original cast.

Director Rian Johnson has attracted a new roster of big hitters, so Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, and Toni Collette will not return for the highly anticipated sequel.

Dave Bautista (Army of The Dead), Edward Norton (Fight Club, The French Dispatch), Janelle Monáe (Antebellum), Kathryn Hahn (Stepbrothers), Leslie Odom Jr. (The Many Saints of Newark), and Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) were all confirmed as cast members for the film back in May 2021, though their roles have yet to be confirmed.

Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Jessica Henwick (Hold Still Vincent), and Ethan Hawke (Sinister) were all revealed as part of a cast full of Hollywood heavyweights the following month.

What Is the Plot of Knives Out 2?

Following the success of the 2019 film, director Johnson hinted at the potential of a sequel.

Later in 2020, it was revealed that Craig was working on a script in which he will resume his role as Blanc.

Early in the new year, Netflix outbid numerous studios for the rights to two sequels, and the team began production almost immediately in June 2021.

The sequel was shot over the course of a month on an island off the coast of Greece. Outside of Greece, principal photography lasted until September of that year.

Many of the original team members will return for Knives Out 2, including cinematographer Steve Yedlin, composer Nathan Johnson, and editor Bob Ducsay.

When Will It Be Released?

Daniel Craig said in an interview that the Netflix film will premiere in Autumn 2022, though no exact date has been set.

However, the British actor confirmed that the production for Knives Out 2 is already over, claiming that the film is “in the can.”

With a trailer currently available, we may presume that it will be released soon.
