Jennifer Holland is making a mark in the DC Extended Universe.
The 35 years old Peacemaker star, tells PEOPLE that working on the Suicide Squad HBO Max sequel series with her partner of 7 years, creator of the show James Gunn, contributed to bringing them “closer” as a pair.
Holland says “It was great. We had an amazing time. At the end of it, our relationship was closer for the experience,” adding further “We got really lucky in that we work well together and it just works for us.”
Holland and Gunn Have Been in a Relationship Since 2015
She and 55 years of Gunn have been in a relationship since 2015 when they were first introduced by their common friend named Michael Rosenbaum. Later, the Chicago-born actress featured in the 2019 superhero horror movie “Brightburn” produced by Gunn.
Holland onboarded the DCEU with 2021 The Suicide Squad, which was both written and directed by Gunn. She started the onscreen character of Emilia Harcourt, an A.R.G.U.S. agent helping the rag-tag group of supers with their mission from the comms room.
The actress says “I had no expectations that it was going to go any further than that. It was just, ‘I’m going to do this fun thing with James and have a great time for a couple of weeks.’ That’s kind of what we thought it was going to be,” adding “Then, the pandemic hit, James got bored while he was doing post-production on The Suicide Squad and he ended up writing this series.
She further added “When he first started writing it, he had no idea that Emilia was going to be such an integral part of the story. The way his writing flows, he just lets the story take him where it needs to go. She became a very integral part of the story. I’m just so grateful for it because it’s all an absolute dream for me.”
In Peacemaker, Harcourt is part of the black ops team working on “Project Butterfly,” battling against the parasitic butterfly-like alien species that has started to take human form.
She butts heads with the eponymous vigilante (played by John Cena), but this week’s penultimate episode features the whole team that has Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, and Steve Agee, get together to save the day in Thursday’s finale of the first season.
Holland to flex her stun as well as dancing skill
Holland was eager to not just further develop her character but show off her stunt skill and fight choreography skills, having contended as a gymnast when she was a child.
She says “I’ve always been very athletic. I love being athletic. I love being physical,” adding “So being able to sort of marrying that with my acting career has just been a dream.
Her gymnastics background also turned out to be useful with the opening dance number to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It,” which has since turned into a viral sensation. Holland says that the routine is “ingrained in my brain,” continuing further “I could flash mob it right now.”
Holland says “We’re all in the same room together. It’s not like they pasted us together in the post or anything like that, so we all had to be on time with the choreography and the music as well as keeping a straight face the whole time. So, getting us all on the same page was a task, but it was great. I love that we all got to have that experience together. It was so much fun.“
The finale of the first season of Peacemaker is available to watch on HBO Max on Thursday, February 17, 2022.
