Daybreak, a Netflix original that debuted just in time for Halloween, was an instant sensation. In the vein of The Breakfast Club and Mad Max, a high-school dramedy, the show incorporated the two genres into its plot. It was an instant hit with critics and spectators alike, and they eagerly awaited the news of a second season. Unfortunately, the wonderful news did not arrive on schedule. All the details we’ve gathered so far about the show’s demise are included here.
Is Netflix’s Daybreak renewed?
As it turns out, no. In December 2019, Netflix confirmed that Daybreak would not be returning for a second season after just a few months of airing. Aron Coleite, one of the show’s co-creators, revealed the news via Twitter.
As he noted, “We learned last week that Daybreak will not be returning for a second season,”. “We’re so sorry we couldn’t share it with you sooner but also grateful that we got to hang out in these last few live-tweet sessions with all of you. Thank you for picking up what we put down, for running with it in all of your amazing, weird, monstrous ways, and for being such an important part of this show and our experience making it.”
I don’t even know how to say this, so we prepared a small statement. Love you all. Thank you! pic.twitter.com/rKXWxuaaFh

“No one is as heartbroken as we are that we can’t share more of this ride with you,” he said, adding that “But we’re so grateful to have gotten to bring it this far.”
Season 1 of Daybreak: What Happened?
Daybreak is set in a post-apocalyptic world that incorporates a wide range of tropes from numerous subgenres of popular culture. Like classic high school films like Mean Girls, it has gangs, ronin, and cliques reminiscent of those seen in Mad Max. There are several high-school cliques in Daybreak, like the Cheermazons and the Jocks that are based on real-world high school cliques.
Josh is a lone wolf who is seeking his girlfriend Sam, who has vanished. A ronin-like person named Wesley Fists (Austin Crute of Booksmart) and 10-year-old punk rock genius Angelica Green (Green) will soon join him.
Against Matthew Broderick, who plays Ferris Bueller’s nemesis, the rest of the group band together. Broderick portrays the wicked Baron Triumph, a former high school administrator who has adopted the persona of the villain.
The first season of the show is largely devoted to Josh’s quest for Sam and the gradual assembling of his team. Additionally, the numerous gangs of survivors wage war against each other for territory and social status.
The survivors’ showdown with Broderick’s Baron Triumph brings the season to a close. There’s still a long way to go, even if they claim victory in the season finale. Instead of reconciling and riding off into the sunset with Josh, Sam declares herself the new leader of the village when given the chance. Both Jocks and Cheermazons bow to their new monarch.
Is there anything that may have happened in the second season of Daybreak?
Taking Sam to the throne would have shifted the show’s focus in Season 2. I believe her rule would have been tyrannical and unjust because of the ominous attitude she exuded in the climax.
In terms of character, the season would have required to focus on Josh realizing that his ideas of Sam are outdated and sexist – he only saw her, in her own words, as a damsel in distress and not a person. To continue surviving the apocalypse, Josh would need to learn a lot more quickly if he wants to avoid being killed by other survivors.
