When Will CNN Plus End Its Services?

The last Monday of March was quite a big moment for CNN, as CNN stars joined for a celebration of their streaming service, CNN+. The launch party was held in a posh Midtown Manhattan skyscraper to introduce a more digital approach in the mainstream media.

Now, in just three weeks since its inception, the network is choosing to shut down its newly introduced streaming platform. On Thursday, Warner Bros. Discovery announced the sudden shut down of the newly launched CNN+ on 30th April 2022.

Chris Licht who is the incoming president mentioned, “While today’s decision is incredibly difficult, it is the right one for the long-term success of CNN.”

The company has claimed to refund all the subscription fees to the current customers but the decision came to act after the new management was introduced. The former parent company, WarnerMedia has now merged with Discovery and together they have become Warner Bros.

 As a matter of fact, CNN+ is just the opposite of what the Warner Bros management had decided on. CEO of Discovery, David Zaslva is currently working on bringing all the content under a singular streaming service. In fact, the programs of CNN+ will also be a part of it. This is done to drive in more audiences on one platform.

 J.B. Perrette from Discovery said, “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service which provides a better experience and more value than stand-alone offerings, and, for the company, a more sustainable business model to drive our future investments in great journalism and storytelling,”

He further continued, “We have very exciting opportunities ahead in the streaming space and CNN, one of the world’s premier reputational assets, will play an important role there.”

Many Employees Are Going To Lose Their Job

The decision was conveyed to the employees on Thursday afternoon only and the whole thing got messy. New staffers were hired for the new project but as this is coming to an end, the sudden layoff is quite surprising. To provide relief, the employees who will lose their job will get paid plus additional benefits for the upcoming 90 days. They will get a chance of getting absorbed at CNN, CNN Digital, and also in any company of the Warner Bros. Discovery family. In case, some people fail to get placed, then they will get six months of severance to start with. It can also extend in the future. 

In spite of being a successful launch, it has to be taken down for future prospects. Stating the situation inside the meeting, a person explained the entire scenario, “At first people were really freaking out,” “And then, toward the end of the meeting, it just turned to sadness. Every team was just cuddling with each other.” 

Now, the team wasn’t satisfied with Jeff Zucker’s leadership as well. He served till February and currently, Jason Kilar was leading. But even he had to leave in April. 

The CNN+ was launched and after two weeks, the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger was finalized. Though no one guessed that it would have impacted the future of CNN+ but so happened.

As Warner Bros is drowning in billions of debts, that’s why this merger happened. The former executive vice president of CNN+ and associated digital businesses are going to leave when the transition period ends.

Morse was emotional while explaining his nine years of blissful journey at CNN and said, “As the company enters an exciting period of change, it’s clear that the vision the new leadership has for the future is different than the one we’ve had. That’s OK. That’s all part of the change.”
