Space Force Canceled By NETFLIX After 2 Seasons? (Official Update)

Space Force is one of Netflix’s biggest comedy projects to date which stars The Office’s, Steve Carrell. Despite major cost-cutting, it wasn’t enough to warrant the show coming back for future episodes with the show now officially canceled as of April 2022.

This article was first published on February 21st and has been updated over time to reflect new information. It was last updated in April 2022.

Netflix gave Space Force a season 2 several months after it premiered. The first season was released back in May 2020 but a renewal didn’t come until November 2020. Season 2 was released on Netflix globally on February 18th, 2022.

There are no major changes to any characters’ positions by season two’s end.

Most of the characters have decided to stay with Space Force after receiving pay raises and knowing that the future of the military branch is now secure.

A big asteroid is hurtling toward the Earth at the end of season 2, just like in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up. The asteroid was discovered by the entire crew thanks to the newly operational Hawaiin telescope.

They break into song (Kokomo by The Beach Boys) when they see the asteroid approaching and realize that they are doomed. This is a throwback to the first season of the show.

During the next month, we’ll be updating this post as we wait to see how the new season performs, so we can more accurately predict if the show will be returning for a third season.

Space Force Season 3: Officially Canceled?

According to Deadline, no decision had been made about the future of Space Force at Netflix as of April 28th, 2022. During a conversation with Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy. According to the interview,

On the other hand, she also admitted that the studio hasn’t taken a decision on either Space Force or Murderville, starring Steve Carrell and Will Arnett respectively.”

Friday, April 29th brought the news that Space Force would not be returning for a third season, just one day after that announcement.

Even with the show’s major cost reductions, it was canceled. Season 2’s production was relocated to Vancouver from Los Angeles in order to save money, which resulted in a reorganization of the writers’ room. As a result, the show’s total number of episodes was lowered from 10 to 7.

Season 1 may have fallen short of expectations, but rather than give up on the show, it decided to give it a second chance. Another contestant is unlikely to be added unless the show can pull the numbers together (more on this in a sec).

One bright spot for the show’s future is that the second season’s reviews appear to be overwhelmingly positive.

It’s also worth noting that two clips from the second season of Space Force went viral on TikTok. Remember when John Malkovich was mad at Microsoft for scheduling an auto-update at an inconvenient time? That was the moment we were talking about.

How Well Did Space Force Season 2 Perform On Netflix?

As previously stated, the likelihood of a third season is heavily reliant on viewership, and the current picture doesn’t look good.

Season 1 was watched by 40 million subscribers in its first month, but unfortunately, this season won’t be able to achieve the same success. The reason for this is that Netflix no longer provides data on how many subscribers watch.

As an alternative, we can take a look at Netflix’s Top 10 hourly data, which shows that the show lacks the support it needs for a third season.

After being added to Netflix with two days to spare, the show was eligible for inclusion in the Top 10 charts for the week of February 14th through February 20th, but it fell short of the 11.04M hours viewed required to claim the top spot for that week.

A disappointing 12.32 million hours were watched in its first week in the top ten. After that, it hasn’t returned to the top 10 in the global rankings.

This series didn’t get off to the best start around the world based on FlixPatrol’s top 10 data. The series debuted in the top 10 of the US TV ratings at number 5 on both its first and second days of availability. Inventing Anna, Love is Blind, Sweet Magnolias, and The Cuphead Show! all beat it to the punch.

On February 25th, the show dropped out of the Netflix US overall top 10s and the TV top 10s on March 1st, respectively. There are only a few other countries where the show is aired as well.

You can see which countries had the most episodes of a given show air over the course of the top 10. It’s naturally popular in the United States and Canada, but it has also performed well in Australia, some Eastern European countries, and the Nordic region.
