In court on Monday, Amber Heard told jurors that her marriage to star Johnny Depp was on the verge of collapse. After a restraining order was filed against Depp in 2016, the 36-year-old cried as she recounted the circumstances that led to her filing for divorce.
Following a defamation action filed by Depp against Heard over the publication of an op-ed in The Washington Post about being a survivor of domestic violence, the trial is being heard in Fairfax County Court in Virginia. The actor’s name is not mentioned in the article.
She confessed, “I knew I had to leave him,” and she did. “I knew I wouldn’t survive it if I didn’t.” When she sought the restraining order, she claimed she only wanted a “good night’s sleep.” She went on to say, “I just wanted to change my locks.”
She also said that the security guards in her building always let Depp into the house, even when she begged them not to. Initially, I was frightened. I was very conflicted because the person I was afraid of, was also the person I was in love with,” she said. She recalled the incidents of the assault she had been subjected to and contradicted other accusations.
She talked about the celebrations after her birthday in 2016 that Johnny Depp was unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict. Depp allegedly got into a violent battle with her later that night, pulling her by the hair, shoving her, and even throwing a champagne bottle that missed her.
When she was accused of defecating on his bed with a companion, she labeled it “a delusion” and insisted that it was one of the dogs. They even got into a fight over an incident that a friend she was talking to overheard and told her to keep away from because it was dangerous.
“Johnny was my home … and that home was often really violent.”

“He pulls his arm back with the phone and throws it at my face,” she said of how Depp reacted after hearing her friend’s warning. “I put my head in my hands and immediately start crying.” The companion dialed 911, but when the emergency responders arrived, Heard allegedly refused to cooperate. “I wanted to protect Johnny,” she testified. “I didn’t want him to be arrested.” She then sought a restraining order and a divorce from her husband. She said it was the “hardest thing” she had ever had to do.
“I was conflicted. I knew after he threw the phone at my face…I knew I had to leave him,” Heard explained. “I knew I didn’t, I knew I would likely not literally survive. I was so scared that it was going to end really badly for me. I really didn’t want to leave him, I loved him so much. But I couldn’t stay.”
“I was begging Johnny not to make me prove what I am sitting here having to prove to all of you today,” she said in reference to the trial. “Everything I said then, everything I’ve said to date is the truth. I don’t want anything from him, just don’t call me a liar.” Stay tuned with us only on leedaily.com
