Why Has “Endeavour” Been Canceled After 9 Seasons? (UPDATED)

Endeavour, the beloved police drama that has aired for a decade, is coming to an end. Shaun Evans portrays Endeavour Morse and Roger Allam portrays DCI Fred Thursday in the television series.

Endeavour Morse’s early days as a detective with the Oxford City Police CID are explored in this prequel to the long-running series Inspector Morse. There have been nine seasons of the show now, which originally started off as a film in 2012.

Inspector Morse, which ran from 1987 to 2000, also had a spin-off, Lewis, which ended in 2015. So, why was Endeavour discontinued after nine seasons?

Why Did Endeavour End After 9 Seasons?

Just a few weeks before the U.S. premiere of Endeavour on Sunday, June 18, ITV and PBS have announced that the show would cease after its ninth season.

Executive producer Damien Timmer explained the decision to stop the show by saying that screenwriter Russell Lewis felt the tale had reached its logical conclusion.

Lewis, Evans, and Allam, as well as the production firm, Mammoth Screen, came to an agreement on the ending.

Timmer said: Endeavour has been a real labour of love for all of us, and we salute Russell Lewis for his extraordinary achievement in chronicling Endeavour Morse’s coming of age across 72 hours of TV.

“Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us!”

The good news is that fans in the U.K., the U.S., and all over the world still have one more season to look forward to. Like seasons 7 and 8, it will have three episodes.

Timmer continued: “We’d like to thank Shaun and Roger and all the other members of the Endeavour family on- and off-screen, and the show’s fans both in the U.K. and abroad. Russell has many surprises up his sleeve for the final three films, with the return of some familiar faces and new challenges for Endeavour and Thursday to face before the final goodbye!”

Endeavour Morse (played by Evans) and Fred Thursday (played by Allam) will look into a brand-new case that will push them to their limits in Season 9.

Season 8’s storyline, in which they investigated the IRA and the murder of a local cab driver as well as the strange death of a college professor, may still be weighing on them.

Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright (Anton Lesser), Detective Sergeant Jim Strange (Sean Rigby), and journalist Dorothea Frazil will join Morse and Thursday, as well as Morse’s daughter Joan Thursday (Sara Vickers) (Abigail Thaw).

Filming for Season 9 is now taking place in Oxford, therefore it is possible that Season 9 will premiere on television this year.

Thaw, who has played Dorothea Frazil since the show started, posted the official video from the Endeavour Twitter account announcing that the show was ending. She wrote next to it, with a heartbreak emoji, “What a ride, eh?”

In the meantime, you can watch Endeavour episodes on ITV Hub and Amazon Prime. On Sunday, June 18, PBS will air the eighth season of Endeavour. Stay tuned with us only on leedaily.com
