Naomi Judd’s Relationship With Her Daughter Ashley Judd

The death of Ashley Judd’s mother, Naomi Judd, continues to astound the country music community. She committed suicide on April 30, 2022, with her family blaming her death on mental illness. As Wynonna’s mother was due to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, she died just one day before her induction ceremony.

Instead, Wynonna and Ashley, Naomi’s sisters, accepted the offer on her behalf. In a statement shared with The Associated Press, Ashley and Wynonna revealed their mother’s passing, writing, “Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that her public loved her as we loved her. We are in unknown territory.”

Ashley and Naomi’s relationship had ups and downs, but it was always loving. But in the end, they formed an unbreakable friendship.

According to Ashley, her mother did not know how much the country music community appreciated her.

In light of her mother’s recent induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the actress wishes she could have stayed a little longer. Wynona and she said it best during her memorial ceremony: “She left country music better than she found it.”

Daily, they exchanged words. Despite the grief over her mother’s passing, Ashley says she feels at peace because of the two women’s deep bond. In the absence of Ashley, the mother-daughter duo communicated through phone or FaceTime every day.

Naomi Judd supported Ashley Judd’s Decision to Come Out Against Harvey Weinstein

During the #TimesUp movement, Ashley was one of the celebrities who came out about Weinstein’s sexual harassment. She told Access Hollywood that her mom told her, “Honey, go get him.”

Naomi Judd’s daughters were raised on welfare because Ashley was only made aware of it later in her life.

Naomi relied on public assistance while attending school in Kentucky to become a nurse until she signed a record deal with Wynnona with RCA, which allowed her to support her two daughters. Her biography also stated that she didn’t know her true origins because Naomi wasn’t open about them.

“[My mother] created an origin myth for the Judds that did not match [her] reality,” she wrote. “She and my sister have been quoted saying that our family put the ‘fun’ in dysfunction. I wondered: Who, exactly, was having all the fun? What was I missing?”

Ashley Judd found her mother on the day of her death and disclosed the cause of death to the world.

Ashley and her mother shared a house, and she went to see her every day while she was home. A friend of Ashley’s had come to help her mother through a difficult period, and she informed Diane Sawyer that she had temporarily left the house that day.

She was surprised to see Naomi when she returned. Before an official autopsy could occur, Naomi’s family decided to tell the public how she died. Ashley’s only statement to Sawyer was that her mother shot her to death with a gun.

They Both Talked Openly About Their Struggles With Depression

Ashley, like her mother, experienced depression and disclosed in her memoir in 2011 that she was sexually molested as a child and that no one in her family first believed her when she first informed them. Her mother and sister frequently left her behind as they travelled the world, which caused Ashley to feel anger toward them.

The story of Naomi’s life hasn’t been quite a happy one. She gave birth to Wynonna on the night of her high school graduation and had a challenging relationship with a man, including an ex who beat and raped her when she was 22 after he broke into her apartment.
