Creed 3 Release Date, Plot, Cast, Trailer and More (UPDATED 2022)

“Rocky” is one of the most powerful franchises of all time, beginning with Sylvester Stallone’s best picture-winning “Rocky” in 1976. Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa is given the opportunity of a lifetime to face heavyweight champion Apollo Creed in the original film. An explosive success, “Rocky” launched a successful franchise that continues to thrive today.

Ryan Coogler’s “Creed,” released nearly ten years after 2006’s “Rocky Balboa,” pushed the series in a new direction. The film follows Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis, Apollo Creed’s estranged son, on his quest to become a boxing champion with Rocky’s guidance.

Over $170 million and a 95 percent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes proved “Creed” to be the breath of new air the franchise needed after years of stagnant sequels. In 2018, “Creed II” was released as a sequel. Adonis takes on Viktor Drago, whose father, Ivan Drago, killed Apollo in the ring during “Rocky IV.” Even though it received less critical acclaim than its predecessor, the sequel was a financial success, grossing $214 million globally.

It was just a matter of time until news of a sequel surfaced again. More information about its release is now leaking out of the shadows, and our brains are spinning with possibilities. Here’s everything we know about “Creed 3.”

What Is the Release Date of Creed 3?

Creed 3, according to sources, was about to be released on November 23, 2022, later it was changed to March 3, 2023. Michael B. Jordan and MGM announced the date in March 2021. Jordan was first seen in Atlanta, Georgia, where filming for the movie began in late January 2022.

The film’s production is notable since Jordan will not only reprise his part as the eponymous character but he will also direct. After Ryan Coogler and Steven Caple Jr.’s contributions in the previous two entries, this will be his directorial debut.

Jordan told, “Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right. ‘Creed 3’ is that moment — a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally, and learning from the greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect.”

What Is the Plot of Creed 3?

While the plot of “Creed 3” has yet to be officially disclosed, fans have come up with their own theories. Many fans believe that Adonis Creed will face Clubber Lang, the son of Rocky III’s antagonist, in the third installment of the Rocky franchise. In the 1982 film, Mr. T plays Lang, a hot-headed, young opponent who challenges Rocky and succeeds in briefly seizing the heavyweight belt after defeating the Philadelphia fighter in a match. This time Rocky, with some help from Apollo, defeats Lang once again.

This scenario doesn’t seem too different from the previous “Creed” installment, in which Adonis faced up against the son of another former Rocky rival. There have been a number of recent revelations regarding the film that could paint a completely different picture.

In an interview with Michael B. Jordan’s co-star Jonathan Majors, the actor stated, “Michael is really trying to do something different with this ‘Creed.’ Something that’s a bit more intimate”. He continued, “It’s a story about these two men trying to work something out, and it’s very different from the others.”

If Jordan’s concept for the finished picture is anything other than what fans had in mind, it’s possible that fans will be disappointed.

Creed 3 Cast

Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Wood Harris, and Phylicia Rashad will all return for “Creed III” to reprise their roles. Florian Munteanu, who played Viktor Drago in the first season, will return. We’ll have to wait and see if this implies a rematch with Adonis or a friendship between the two like Rocky and Apollo had.

With Rocky in mind, it’s worth noting that Sylvester Stallone’s participation in “Creed III” has been hotly debated thus far. Stallone himself has stated that the Italian Stallion would not be appearing in the upcoming installment as previously speculated. In spite of the fact that Jordan was upset, she made certain that Balboa’s spirit would not be broken.

“We really want fans to be interested in Adonis and what that story has to say,” Jordan explained. “There’s going to be so many Rocky-isms that are forever going to stay with Adonis as he moves forward. So as far as page space, or whether or not Rocky comes back for this one, this is the ‘Creed’ franchise moving forward.”

Adonis’ next opponent is yet to be determined. Jonathan Majors, best known for his role in Netflix’s Western “The Harder They Fall,” is Creed’s new foe. Jordan lauded Majors in an interview, adding, “He has so many different talents and things that he brings to the table. He was just perfect for the role, so it was a match made in heaven. I’m extremely lucky. We’re very blessed to have him and I can’t wait for everybody to see what we do.”
