However, the social media trial of Amber Heard had one obvious winner – sexism, despite the fact that the US court deemed both Johny Depp and Amber Heard victims of defamation.
The US courts issued a decision favoring Depp in a significant way this week, but they also concluded that Depp’s former attorney, Adam Waldman, was guilty of defaming her.
Comparatively, Heard was granted a total of $2 million in compensatory damages, while Depp was granted a total of $15 million, including $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

The judgment was hailed as a victory for those who had survived domestic violence, and there was much rejoicing on social media once it was announced. Depp expressed his gratitude to the judges for restoring his freedom.
The defamation trial was portrayed as an attempt by a prominent guy who had been wronged to seek justice from his vindictive and violent ex-wife who had beaten and bullied him and then lied about it.
This was done right from the beginning of the trial. Following their divorce in 2016, Amber Heard wrote an essay for the Washington Post in 2018 about Johnny Depp, which prompted Depp to bring a defamation lawsuit against Heard for the amount of $50 million.
Heard and Depp had previously been married. Heard writes about her experience of surviving an abusive marriage in the piece. (Although she did not specifically mention Johnny Depp by name.)
But what did the Depp-Heard trial actually imply or accomplish for people who had survived domestic violence? The evidence presented at the trial makes it quite evident that during their marriage, both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were abusive to each other. Additionally, in November 2020, a judge in the United Kingdom found that Johnny Depp was an abuser in a similar libel case.

This came after Depp attempted to sue the British newspaper ‘The Sun’ for printing an article that accused him of being a ‘wife-beater,’ but the lawsuit was unsuccessful. During that trial, Heard had claimed that between 2013 and 2016, Depp had physically abused her fourteen times, and she could recall each of those occasions.
