Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California, to hospital worker Janet Marylyn (née Frager) and itinerant chef Amos Mefford Hanks. His mother was Portuguese (her surname was “Fraga”) and his father was English. In 1960 his parents separated.

Sandra (after Sandra Hanks Benoiton, a writer), Larry (an entomology professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and Tom left with their father, while Jim stayed with his mother in Red Bluff, California.  By age 10, Hanks’ family had relocated 10 times.
