Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California, to hospital worker Janet Marylyn (née Frager) and itinerant chef Amos Mefford Hanks. His mother was Portuguese (her surname was “Fraga”) and his father was English. In 1960 his parents separated.
