FCC Commissioner Contacts Apple and Google on the Removal of Tiktok

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr requested that Apple and Google remove TikTok from their app stores due to “its pattern of shady data practices.” TikTok’s personnel in China had access to U.S. users’ data as far back as January, according to a revelation by BuzzFeed News last week.

“As you know TikTok is an app that is available to millions of Americans through your app stores, and it collects vast troves of sensitive data about those U.S. users. TikTok is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance an organization that is beholden to the Communist Party of China and required by the Chinese law to comply with PRC’s surveillance demands,” Carr said in a letter addressed to Sundar Pichai and Tim Cook.

“It is clear that TikTok poses an unacceptable national security risk due to its extensive data harvesting being combined with Beijing’s apparently unchecked access to that sensitive data.”

According to Buzzfeed, TikTok has stated that it is relocating all of its American users’ data to Oracle servers in the United States. It stated that the corporation still relies on its own servers in the United States and Singapore to back up its data. But in the future, it plans to “delete U.S. users’ private data from our own data centers and fully switch to Oracle cloud servers in the U.S.”

“We’re also making operational changes in line with this work — including the new department we recently established, with U.S.-based leadership, to solely manage U.S. user data for TikTok,” the company stated.

When it comes to TikTok, Trump recommended an outright ban, while Biden proposed new guidelines that would give additional oversight on applications with ties to “jurisdiction of foreign adversaries” that could pose national security problems. Stay tuned with us only on Lee Daily
