Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which opened to critical and commercial acclaim last fall, breathed new life into a beloved film brand. The legacy-quel from director Jason Reitman was so favorably welcomed at CinemaCon this year that a new Ghostbusters sequel was confirmed. Afterlife’s sequel has a release date that isn’t too far off in the broad scheme of things, making it a topic of conversation again.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be followed by a sequel in December of 2023. Since ghost stories are often told around the holidays and the last movie made a good amount of money when it came out on November 18, 2021, this seems like a good idea. There is yet no official title for this new picture, and we may have to wait until the first trailers are out to receive one.
The Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 premiere seemed a little rushed, to be honest. Even while Afterlife’s finale managed to establish the groundwork for the next chapter, it was nonetheless a disappointing one. To say nothing of the fact that Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore, the original Ghostbusters, ended the film with a moment that has already been utilized as a clue.

Firehouse, previously known as “Firehouse” during this year’s Ecto-Fest celebration, has already been confirmed as the final destination in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. If that’s the case, someone at Ghostbusters HQ better attend to the blinking red light on the confinement unit. Every one of us remembers what happened during “The Manhattan Crossrip of 1984,” the last time the ominous sign appeared.
Finally, when it comes to the upcoming Ghostbusters movie, it’s important to examine the competition it will face in the year 2023. On December 15th, Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka prequel and the untitled Star Trek sequel will be competing for the audience’s attention. If Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is released in late 2023, as Lucasfilm Ltd. president Kathleen Kennedy has stated, it could get much more brutal.
Isn’t it nice to see the movie industry returning to normalcy? Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion have proved that moviegoers are willing to return back into the theaters, despite heightened competition. Another nostalgia-fueled effort could produce another bonanza at a theater near you in 2023 with the return of classics like Indiana Jones and Ghostbusters in new sequels.
On December 20, 2023, the untitled sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife will arrive in theaters with horrifying ghost stories and tales of Ghostbuster greatness. Whatever the official title of this video is, it’s impossible not to believe that it’s already out there, waiting to be captured.
