After more than a decade since the game’s initial release on Windows PC in Japan and more than six years since the online RPG’s launch on PlayStation 4 overseas, PlayStation customers in the Western hemisphere are finally getting their version of Phantasy Star Online 2, the sequel to the popular online role-playing game.
On Friday, Sega made the announcement that the most recent iteration of the game referred to as Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, would be released on the PS4 on August 31.

Because of a push from Xbox chief Phil Spencer, who took Sega’s game to Xbox’s E3 2019 stage event, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is already available in North America and Europe on Xbox platforms and on Windows PC.
This is partly because Phil Spencer brought the game to the show. There will be cross-platform compatibility between the PlayStation 4 version of PSO2 New Genesis and the Windows PC and Xbox One versions of the game. The PS4 version of the game, similar to the other versions of the game already available, will be free to play.
The original version of PSO2 is playable on a number of different platforms, such as the personal computer, the PlayStation Vita, and the Nintendo Switch, which supports playthroughs over the cloud. The story of Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis takes place one thousand years after the events of the first version of the game, and it expands upon the action, fighting, and character customization of the first game.
In the year 2000, the Phantasy Star Online series made its debut on the Sega Dreamcast. The original Phantasy Star Online took players online to the planet of Ragol, where they would meet up with other adventurers to explore dungeons, complete quests, earn loot, and level up, using a variety of classes and races.

The game was inspired by Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo and Sega’s classic 8-bit and 16-bit role-playing games. The open world of Halpha serves as the location for the action in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, which pits players (ARKS) against a new enemy menace known as DOLLS.

The process of bringing Phantasy Star Online 2 to Western audiences has been a challenging one. Initially, Sega intended to release it in the United States in “early 2013,” and the company even brought a playable PC version to PAX in 2012; however, the release was indefinitely postponed. Not until 2019 did it become official that there will be a release of it in countries other than Japan.
