James Caan died on Wednesday, and he was most known for his role as Sonny Corleone in the 1970s mafia thriller The Godfather. According to a statement released by his family, actor James Caan, best known for his role as mobster Sonny Corleone in the 1970s film The Godfather, died at the age of 82.

Caan’s Twitter account tweeted a message on Thursday, but it didn’t disclose how he died. There was a statement reading, “It is with great regret that we notify you that Jimmy died on July 6th.” It’s been a terrible time for the family, so they ask that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

For his role as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather, Caan was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor in the category of best-supporting actor. In one of the film’s most memorable sequences, Sonny gets shot while he’s parked on a toll road.

One of the greatest mafia films ever made was followed by The Godfather: Part II, which included a number of flashback sequences in which Caan reprised his role as Sonny.

It wasn’t until his early 1980s that he started turning away from acting in films; nonetheless, Michael Mann’s 1981 heist picture Thief, in which he portrayed an expert safecracker seeking a way out, is one of his most lauded.

Ellen Burstyn co-starred with him in the romantic comedy Queen Bees last year.  Caan said he walked out of the viewing when he saw the moment wasn’t included. This made him angry enough that he couldn’t watch the remainder of the movie. “However, he gave me a tremendous honor,” Caan said.

As word of Caan’s passing spread on Thursday, tributes flooded in for the actor.

“Never ever stopped laughing when I was with that guy,” Adam Sandler, the actor and comedian, tweeted. In my opinion, his films were the greatest of the best. He will be sorely missed by all of us.”

Ice-T tweeted that Caan was the “star of my fave movie ever” accompanying the trailer for the 1981 picture Thief, to which rapper and actor Ice-T responded by saying Caan was “a fantastic actor who has left us.” A snapshot of Billy Dee Williams and Caan from their time onscreen together in Brian’s Song has surfaced online.
