It is thought that Taylor-Johnson, who was a close friend of Winehouse’s, worked on the Amy Winehouse Biopic since it was very much a passion project for her.
It is interesting to note that Mitch Winehouse, the late singer’s father, who was depicted in an unfavorable light in the documentary “Amy,” which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, is fully behind “Back to Black.”

Additionally, Mitch Winehouse was a contributor to the 2021 BBC documentary titled “Reclaiming Amy,” which commemorated the ten-year anniversary of Amy Winehouse’s passing. Matt Greenhalgh, who previously worked with Taylor-Johnson on “Nowhere Boy” and also penned “Control,” the highly praised biopic about the late Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis, is the author of “Back to Black.”
“Nowhere Boy” and “Control” were both directed by Taylor-Johnson. Alongside Tracey Seaward, Studiocanal’s Alison Owen and Debra Hayward are serving as producers on this project.
At the age of 27, Winehouse her away in 2011 as a result of alcohol poisoning. She was well known for popular songs like as “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good.” She was nominated for six Grammy Awards for her work on the album “Back to Black,” which she produced together with the album “Frank.”
Owen and Hayward have been linked to the project since it was first conceived as a biopic about her life. The project has been in development for a number of years. In 2018, the Winehouse estate became the first party to sign a contract for the film, despite the fact that Geoff Deane, the writer of “Kinky Boots,” had already authored an earlier draught of the script.

In 2018, Winehouse responded to rumors that Lady Gaga may be cast in the role of the problematic artist by denying such rumors. “I wouldn’t mind betting it would be an anonymous, young, English — London, cockney — actress who looks a little like Amy,” he said at the time to the British tabloid The Sun. “I wouldn’t mind betting it would be an unknown, young, English — London, cockney” actress.

“What we are looking for is somebody who can play Amy in the manner that she actually was—someone who can depict her as the hilarious, intelligent, charming, and awful person that she was.” Since I am her father, there isn’t much purpose in me creating the movie because it will just be about us. However, it is absolutely vital to make sure that the appropriate people are doing the work, and we will.”
