President Joe Biden Tested Positive For Covid-19

On Thursday, July 21, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Joe Biden had tested positive for Covid-19.

“He has been fully vaccinated and given two booster shots, and his symptoms are very mild,” Jean-Pierre said in a press release. “He has begun taking Paxlovid. In line with CDC guidelines, he will stay in his room at the White House and continue to do all of his work as usual.

She said that Biden will continue to join White House meetings by phone and Zoom. He has already been on calls with administration staff this morning. He took his last Covid-19 test on Tuesday and got a negative result. He will continue to work in isolation until he gets another negative result.

Jean-Pierre also said that the White House is in the process of telling anyone Biden talked to directly on Wednesday and Thursday, including members of Congress and the press, and that it will give a daily update on Biden’s health while he is working in isolation.

Biden himself posted a video on Thursday thanking people for their concern and letting them know he was feeling a little sick. In the clip, which showed him standing on a balcony outside, he said, “I’m doing well and getting a lot of work done.” “Keep the faith in the meantime. It’ll be all right.”

Biden is one of the most recent of the nearly 90 million infections that have been recorded in the US since the start of the pandemic. He is also one of the well-known US lawmakers who have tested positive in the last few months. In April, Kamala Harris tested positive for Covid-19, but she kept working while she was alone at her house.

Since the president has been fully vaccinated and has had two booster shots, he should have a much lower chance of getting serious symptoms. When President Donald Trump got the coronavirus in October 2020, before vaccines were approved, the situation was very different. Trump had serious complications that sent him to Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was given a set of medications after his oxygen levels dropped dangerously low while he was also getting oxygen support.

Still, even though he is well protected, Biden’s age of 79 puts him in a group of people who are at a higher risk for serious complications, so the White House medical team will keep a close eye on him for any signs that his symptoms are getting worse.

The number of cases in the US has been going up, and the highly contagious BA.5 strain is now the most common in the US. But since the omicron surge, official advice, including from the Biden administration, has become less strict. When the whole country decides to live with a virus, there will be outbreaks.

Biden, on the other hand, has responsibilities that most people don’t have, and the fact that Covid-19 still poses more of a risk to older people makes people wonder about the risks to him and what will happen if he can’t do his job.

How Much Danger Is Biden In?

Experts on infectious diseases don’t think that Biden will get a bad case of Covid-19. In general, people over 50 are much more likely to be hospitalized or die from a Covid-19 infection than people under 50.

CDC data from January 2022 showed that people between the ages of 65 and 74 died 45 times more often than people between the ages of 18 and 29 during the omicron wave this past winter. In the same time period, the death rate for people over 75 was 136 times higher than for people between the ages of 18 and 29. Biden’s most recent physical exam showed that he was taking medicine for high cholesterol and atrial fibrillation. The CDC does not say that these conditions make a person more likely to get sick from Covid-19.

Getting vaccinated and getting booster shots lowers the risk of serious illness by a lot. One recent study from Israel found that people over 60 who got two booster shots were much less likely to die during the omicron wave than those who got only one extra dose. But the effects of that second dose seem to only last a short time. After a few months, they started to go away, and the study looked at an earlier version. On March 30, Biden got his second boost shot.

David Celentano, an expert on infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University, says that at this point all that can be done is to keep an eye on his symptoms and oxygen levels and give him Paxlovid.

Arturo Casadevall, who is also an infectious disease expert at Johns Hopkins, said that Covid-19 is a bigger worry if a patient has a disease like pneumonia that causes inflammation of the lungs. “Vaccinated people have a much, much lower chance of getting to that stage of the disease. Biden is also taking an antiviral drug,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s current rules say that Biden will have to stay in isolation for at least five days. The White House says that he will continue to do his job as vice president while he is in isolation.
