Scream 6 Release Date Status, Plot, Cast and Much More (UPDATED)

To this day, Ghostface is considered one of the greatest villains in cinematic history. Scream rapidly became a cultural phenomenon with a reaction that rivaled Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), and Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). A young woman was frightened by a voice on the phone who kills behind a Ghostface mask in the film franchise. After several sequels, the franchise peaked in 2011 and then sagged.

That changed in 2022 when a sequel named Scream resurrected the series with its own name. For “honoring Craven’s legacy and offering thoughtful meta-commentary on horror films,” critics praised the movie, which they called “the best of the Scream sequels.” Scream 6 was revealed in February of 2022, and it’s set to open in theaters in the spring of that year.

Scream 6: The Plot

This time around, most of the action will take place in New York City instead of Los Angeles. According to the summary, ‘Four survivors of the Ghostface killings have left Woodsboro and are now beginning a new chapter in the Scream narrative’.

Other than that, little is known about the sequel, and that’s by purpose. Melissa Barrera, who will reprise her role in the follow-up to Scream 2022, revealed to Us Weekly that, “They have us so tight-lipped around here. All I can say is how it feels. I don’t wanna say the wrong word, but it feels scarier… I think people are gonna be surprised.”

Scream 6 Cast

This isn’t Barrera’s only chance to reprise her role in the film. She’s accompanied by Jenna Ortega (X, 2022), Mason Gooding (Booksmart, 2019), Jasmin Savoy Brown (For the People, 2018-2019), and Hayden Panettiere (Scream 4, 2011), and Courtney Cox (Shining Vale, 2022) in this cast. Gale Weathers, played by Cox, will be the only character to appear in all six Scream movies. Only one other lady has appeared in as many films as she has, and they’re all in the horror genre.

This year’s Ready or Not (2019) stars Henry Czerny and Samara Weaving, who are both newcomers to the franchise. All of these actors will be joined by a host of others, including Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Flash Thompson), Liana Liberato (Light as a Feather), and Dermot Mulroney (Umma, 2022). On the subject of his character in the film, Mulroney gave an honest answer, “Yeah, I play a cop… I guess I shouldn’t say that my daughter is one of the victims… but I don’t have to describe how or in what way, so that’s what draws me into the story strong family ties.”

Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who directed the fifth film in the franchise, will return to direct the film. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who penned the fifth film and 2019’s Ready or Not, are both returning as writers. As an executive producer, Kevin Williamson, the original writer, and creator of the show returns to his role.

Gary Barber (Glass, 2019), Cathy Konrad (Scream, 2022), Marianne Maddalena (Scream, 2022), Peter Oillataguerre (Dead Silence, 2007), and Chad Villella are also executive producers on the film (Southbound, 2015). Paul Neinstein, William Sherak, and James Vanderbilt will serve as producers.

Scream Will Continue Without Sidney

Neve Campbell will not reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in this new movie, which will include a number of returning characters. After contract and compensation concerns, Campbell revealed in June that she would not be returning to the franchise. According to her official statement, she said the following:

“As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

As a result, a number of commentators have asserted that continuing the series without its ultimate female protagonist will be pointless. Barrera, on the other hand, found the time during her interview with Us Weekly to address Campbell’s absence.

“It’s hard thinking that we’re making a movie without her. Of course, Sidney is present. Her essence is present in the movie. You just can’t ignore that… We were all heartbroken, but we totally understand and respect her decision and hopefully, if we get to make another one, we can have her back.” Stay tuned with us only on Lee Daily
