Joseph (Mark Duplass) asks videographer Patrick Brice (who is also the director and co-writer) to make a movie for his purported pregnant kid, played by Patrick Brice (who is also the director and co-writer). Since they are so difficult to pull off, I prefer horror films that rely only on eerie performances. And Mark Duplass deserves all the credit. His demeanor is quite frightening.
Gerald’s Game (2017)
Mike Flanagan’s version of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game was released before the brilliant The Haunting of Hill House series. Carla Gugino is enormous in the role of Jessie, a married couple vacationing at a remote lake property in Alabama. When no one is around to assist Jessie break free of her handcuffs, it’s a fight for her life and freedom. More of Flanagan’s melancholy-tinged horror, this time with a quiet triumph for its possessed cast of individuals.
The Call (2020)
In the year 2020, two films titled The Call were released. It’s a time travel thriller that revolves around a phone call, so go see the South Korean one. Seo-Yeon, a 28-year-old woman, discovers a phone in her childhood home’s closet. I answer my phone to find that the caller is a 20-year-old neighbor of mine who lives in the same house as me. If you’re looking for a thriller with twists that keep you guessing right up until the end, then this is the one for you.
Under The Shadow (2016)
An allegory for oppression is woven into the plot of this excellent psychological horror, like a few others on this list. A mother and daughter are haunted by an unknown evil in their Tehran house during a series of air attacks known as the War of the Cities in the 1980s. Under The Shadow is a strong entry in the horror genre, evoking memories of The Babadook while also presenting new ideas.
1922 (2017)
This Stephen King movie, based on the novella 1922, is a slow-burner with a captivating performance at its core that is one of the more successful ones. Thomas Jane, widely known for his roles in Boogie Nights and The Punisher, provides one of his best performances as Wilfred James, a farmer who kills his wife with the help of his teen son. If you don’t like rats before this, you’ll hate them even more after this experience.
Cam (2018)
Co-writer Isa Mazzei’s experiences as a camgirl inspired this intelligent psychological horror (or webcam model). Cam, on the other hand, is not a documentary about Alice Ackerman, a teenage camgirl who one day realizes that a copy of herself has taken over her program on the webcam channel. An amazing feature to turn on is this one-of-a-kind drama that’s lit up red with the threat of new technology.
Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)
Comedy-horror vampires vs. the Bronx is a one-of-a-kind film in more ways than one. The film is set in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City and tells the story of young Miguel Martinez, a selfless young man who works tirelessly to generate money for his local bodega. In addition, creepy pale neck-chompers are devouring individuals and their properties. Vampires vs. the Bronx is a unique, amusing take on the vampire genre that focuses on the gentrification of the New York City borough.
Calibre (2018)
This suspenseful mystery, situated in the deep reaches of the Scottish Highlands, is anything but a relaxing vacation. It Follows (2014)
A masterfully produced horror picture that also serves as an allegory for sexually transmitted diseases. That’s right, as stated: As the title suggests, It Follows is focused on a mysterious monster lurking in the shadows, stalking its prey at a crawl, much like a zombie. In the heart of this anxiety pool, our heroine Jay (played by current Scream Queen Maika Monroe) is confronted by a terrible stalker. The original John Carpenter-inspired music makes this a modern classic.
Berlin Syndrome (2017)
Cate Shortland built her name directing terrific indie films, such as Berlin Syndrome before Black Widow came along. A young Australian backpacker, Clare Havel, is kidnapped by a German man and held hostage in his apartment by Teresa Palmer, who plays Clare. There is a game of cat and mouse going on between the captor and the prisoner. However, Berlin Syndrome is a riveting thriller, even when it’s slow-paced due to its constrained environment.
His House (2020)
This is a horror that is all too familiar. As a refugee couple from Sudan, Bol, and Rial, struggle to adapt to their new existence in an English town, His House reveals its demonic dangers.
