The First Transgender Actress to Win a Golden Globe Was Michaela Jaé Rodriguez From “Pose.”

Following a string of scandals that shook the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and brought the award show’s image into disrepute, this year’s Golden Globes were presented in a closed-door ceremony rather than at a public event. The low-key event on Sunday night did, however, have one moment that stood out: Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who plays Pose and won the award for best television actress in a drama series, became the first transgender actress to win a Golden Globe.

Rodriguez gave an emotional statement on Instagram Live in which she thanked everyone who worked on the show and spoke of the importance of opening the path for others. Despite the fact that there were no televised announcements or acceptance speeches, Rodriguez won the award.

“This is for everyone who identifies as queer, transgender, questioning, as*xual, bis*xual, transgender, queer, questioning, questioning, questioning, questioning, questioning, questioning, questioning, questioning This is not only for me; it is also for all of you, “she replied. “There are going to be a great number of young people who are going to be able to trail in and storm in through the door. These young people are going to have a lot of potentials and are going to be talented. This one is for all of you.”

The tale of transgender and queer people of color, as well as the underground ballroom culture that they cultivated in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s, was told in the television show Pose, which recently wrapped up its third and final season in June.

According to NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour, the trailblazing show became popular because of its “bold representation of joy and trauma of LGBTQ existence amidst the backdrop of the AIDS pandemic.” This is how the show was described. According to FX, it was the show with the largest cast of transgender performers in series regular roles, making it a landmark in the history of television.

Blanca Evangelista, portrayed by Rodriguez, was a ballroom competitor who was HIV-positive and had abandoned her previous dance “house” to begin a new one from the ground up. The nurturing house mother was at the heart of the series, which has been praised by reviewers but has not been recognized at award presentations in the past.

For example, Pose won his first Golden Globe at the same time that Rodriguez won his. Since it premiered in 2018, Pose has been nominated for a total of 20 Emmys and has won four of them. The year 2019 marked the year in which Billy Porter made history by being the first gay Black male to win the Emmy for best actor for his portrayal in the program.

Fans and cast members of the show Pose have been quite vocal about their dissatisfaction with the program’s lack of acknowledgment. In the year 2020, stars Indya Moore and Angelica Ross voiced their disapproval toward the Emmys for omitting the Black transgender cast members from their list of nominees for the show.

Moore tweeted using an account that has since been deleted, “something about transgender people not being acknowledged on a show about transgender people who established a culture to celebrate ourselves because the world doesn’t.” Ross wrote on Instagram at the time, “I want you to know from the outset that these tears are not over an award or a nomination.”

“In the end, I need all of y’all to understand that I’m so exhausted; those of you who know me are aware that I’m not just working on screen or behind the scenes, but that I’m working around the clock to get our society to value the lives of transgender people and Black transgender people,” she said. Rodriguez wrote about the challenges she faced in her career as an Afro-Latina in an opinion piece for the Television Academy in 2020.

She called for more representation of Black and Latino communities behind and in front of the cameras, and she urged the Television Academy to give marginalized groups a seat at the table and recognize their hard work, art, and talent. Rodriguez’s piece was published in 2020.

Rodriguez described her character as “this exuberant, very, very caring, compassionate, a little bit hardheaded, but an ambitious spirit” in an interview she gave to NPR in 2018. She talked about the aspects of Blanca’s story that were similar to her own, such as the two of them being shunned from their community but deciding to move on with their lives and help those around them.

“There were times when people insulted me by calling me many different names. I’ve been in a few altercations with other people. A number of individuals have jumped me “Rodriguez added. “You know, I’ve had a lot of things that have happened to me, but I look past those things now and now I’m moving forward, and I always believe that the experiences that you go through are what make you stronger and what help you push forward through life.”

“You know, I’ve had a lot of things that have happened to me, but I look past those things now and now I’m moving forward.” She also reflected on the significance of representation and resiliency in an episode of It’s Been a Minute With Sam Sanders from the previous year, which aired as the series was coming to an end. In this episode, she discussed the work that still needs to be done as well as the importance of these topics.

(The fact that Rodriguez’s historic win occurred in a year in which there was no broadcast ceremony has already been called into question by certain people.) You may view the winners of Sunday’s modest ceremony here. There were several other significant winners. On the big screen, West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg, took home the Oscar for best motion picture musical or comedy.

Actors Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose both earned accolades for their work in the film. The Power of the Dog, directed by Jane Campion, was deemed the year’s greatest motion picture drama, while Campion herself was named the year’s best director.
