The couple was married for three years, but Michelle Branch, a singer, has filed for divorce from Patrick Carney, a member of the band Black Keys. Branch, 39, was jailed on a minor domestic abuse charge at their house less than 24 hours before she filed a six-page lawsuit in Nashville alleging that she and her husband could not work out their problems.
Documents state that “the parties are no longer capable of resuming their marital relationship and living together as husband and wife.” The “Everywhere” singer is suing Carney for child support and primary custody of their two children. As evidenced by court documents, she also sought to be identified as Carney’s life insurance policy’s beneficiary.
Branch and Carney, both 42, have been ordered to attend a mandatory parenting session, and Branch is asking the court to approve a permanent parenting plan that the two of them have agreed upon. On Thursday, Branch shared the news that she and Carney had broken up. They have a 6-month-old daughter and a 4-year-old son.
“To say that I am totally devastated doesn’t even come close to describing how I feel for myself and for my family. The rug has been completely pulled from underneath me and now I must figure out how to move forward,” Branch wrote in a statement released to USA TODAY Thursday. “With such small children, I ask for privacy and kindness.”

After an altercation between Branch and Carney escalated to the point where Branch slapped Carney in the face at least once, police from the Metro Nashville Police Department were called to the couple’s house and Branch was subsequently arrested.
The police report states that Patrick Carney showed no outward signs of injury. On Tuesday, Branch posted bond and was released. According to the papers, she must make an appearance in court on November 7 for a settlement. Stay tuned with us only on Lee Daily
