Governor Bill Lee Announces Action to Increase School Safety: Bill Lee, the governor of Tennessee, disclosed several significant steps his administration has taken to improve school safety. They do this by working with law enforcement, involving parents, and securing schools.

For the first time, Hamilton County Schools will have a School Safety Officer (SSO) or School Resource Officer (SRO) on every campus this year. “A few are still going through the process,” Governor Lee told us. “State and local law enforcement have collaborated throughout the summer to provide proven, hands-on, active shooter training course in each of our three grand divisions.” In the county, there are 79 school programs.

This year, establishing personal connections with kids is another priority. Hamilton County ensures their entrances are secured, and outsiders have limited access to their schools, which Tennessee Highway Patrol has been working on statewide. “The more we know our students, the better we know them, the better we are at anticipating things that might be brewing or coming up as far as safety issues in our schools,” Doremus said.

Doremus claims that there have been more state policeman visits to the school system this year. Parents can report safety concerns through the Safe TN app or Quick Tips on the Hamilton County School District’s or your school’s website. “Walking through, getting to know people, meeting people, especially at our elementary levels. We’re building a good rapport between those officers and our young students,” Doremus told us.
