Costner’s character Dutton is the patriarch of the Yellowstone cattle ranch where he and his family are engaged in a bloody battle to protect their land from various predators.
Dutton had a cancer scare, an assassination attempt and many more near-death experiences in Yellowstone, all of which could have taken his life at any moment. Despite the odds Dutton has always managed to survive, prompting his supporters to speculate on how much longer he has before he finally succumbs to his injuries. Extra approached Costner about the reports that Dutton would die in the fifth season of Yellowstone and he responded sheepishly, “Well, I don’t want to die.” He went on to clarify that Dutton might just be too busy to accommodate death.

“There’s just too much to do but in terms of this story I don’t know where that’s gonna go,” said Costner of what Dutton is facing in the new season. The actor concludes, “You know, I haven’t really thought about that. Everybody dies, but it’s how you live.” This statement emphasizes that the actor has not given much attention to Dutton’s inevitable demise and that what matters more is the journey he is on.

Given how often Dutton has come close to dying on Yellowstone it’s difficult to avoid wondering when he finally does. Costner offers no definitive solution as was to be feared but his perspective is sound in that what Dutton achieves in life is far more critical than his mortality.
Given the current state of the story it seems premature to send Dutton out to pasture mainly because there are still many loose ends tied in Yellowstone’s developing plotline. Like any good television drama Yellowstone relies on the looming threat of a character’s death to keep viewers coming back for more.
