The 51-year-old, whose real name is Michael Tyler, has already served time in prison for domestic violence and sexual assault. According to public jail records seen by Billboard, rapper Mystikal was detained on rape and strangulation-related charges on Sunday (July 31) in Louisiana. According to records, the 51-year-old artist was arrested for first-degree rape, felony domestic violence by strangling, false imprisonment, simple robbery, and criminal property damage and was taken to Ascension Parish Prison.
According to Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre, police were called to a nearby hospital late on Saturday concerning a sexual assault. After speaking with the victim, the rapper was listed as a suspect by the police. Donovan Jackson, a spokesman for the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, said of Mystikal that “he was detained and put into the Ascension Parish Jail” and added that this is an “ongoing investigation.”

Mystikal has been contacted by Billboard for comment. Before this, the rapper served six years in prison after being found guilty of sexual abuse and extortion. He had to register as a sex offender in Louisiana after his release in January 2010. In 2017, he was also accused of rape, and when a warrant for his arrest was issued, he handed himself into the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana. He later faced rape and kidnapping charges, to which he entered a not guilty plea, and was detained at the Caddo Correctional Center until a $3 million bond was posted in 2019. In 2020, the accusations were dropped.
Mystical described that incident to the Associated Press in 2021 as “[it] was like a repeating horrible dream.” I was unsure of how things would turn out. In addition, Mystikal was charged with two misdemeanor counts of failing to submit tax returns for the years 1998 and 1999, as well as a misdemeanor count of domestic violence battery in 2012, the latter of which resulted in a three-month jail sentence.
The rapper, real name Michael Tyler, is best known for his 2000 hit “Shake Ya Ass” and his featured credits on songs like Ludacris’s 2002 “Move Bitch” and the chart-topping 2001 hit “Stutter.” Mystikal has also appeared in several films, including 13 Dead Men, Makin’ Baby, My Side Piece, Mississippi Turntup, Mac & Devin Go to High School, and more.
Rapper Mystikal was detained in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on suspicion of first-degree rape and felony domestic abuse by strangling, among other crimes.
After local police had spoken with a person who claimed they had been the victim of a sexual assault at a nearby hospital, the 51-year-old, actual name Michael Tyler, was taken into custody on Sunday night. Tyler, who had worldwide success with Shake Ya Ass in 2000 and was nominated for two Grammys as a result, was given a six-year term in 2004 after being found guilty of extortion and sexual assault.
After claiming that his hairstylist had stolen $80,000 worth of his checks, Tyler pleaded guilty to subjecting her to what the judge described as “continuous sex acts.” The lady denied taking the cash. After being arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in 2012, Tyler was sentenced to three months in jail. Tyler’s lawyer later described the incident as an “unfortunate episode” between two domestic partners “who have cared for one other for ten years.” His two children’s mother was the victim.
In an April 2021 interview with the Associated Press, Tyler discussed changing his life and approaching music differently. “When I look back and listen to the music, man – I was a nasty lil’ rapper,” he said. “Much of my music now, I imagine myself rapping it to God, and if I can rap it, I’m proud.”
