It is quite evident that Elvis Presley has always been very close to his mother Gladys. However, his father, Vernon, was by the King’s side at every step of his life. Even when Elvis died, his father was there to witness the impact Elvis had left on millions of hearts. So, who was Elvis Presley’s dad and how did he die? We have shared all the information the fans need about the icon’s father.

Who Was Vernon Presley? When And Where Was He Born?

On 10th April 1916, Vernon Presley was born in Fulton, Mississippi. He was like any other regular guy dreaming big in life and marrying the love of his life. Vernon met and quickly proceeded to marry Gladys Smith, Elvis’s mother, at the age of only 17. Now, Gladys was four years older than Vernon, and age made a huge impact at that time. Besides, Vernon was also underage to get married. Thus, they lied about their ages because they wanted to start a family and married in 1933. In just two years, she had twins. However, her first child Jesse Garon Presley was stillborn, whereas another child, Elvis Aaron Presley, was healthy.

When Vernon was interviewed back then about his experience of having a child, he said,

“My love for my son began even before he was born.”

“At that time, there was almost nobody poorer than my wife Gladys and me.”

“But we were thrilled and excited when we learned that we would be parents.”

“I was only 18 years old, but throughout Gladys’ pregnancy, it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be able to take care of her and the baby.”

So, yes, the icon was destined to be a star and Presley has made his parents proud ever since he was in the limelight.

How Did Vernon Presley Earn For Running His Family?

The book “Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley” had detailed many different things about the Presley family. It stated that Vernon had to do many other small jobs to meet the need of the family. In 1938, the finances were so tight that he tried to alter a cheque and then, after getting caught, spent eight months in prison.

But with his son getting worldwide fame and success, Vernon started giving his full time and hours to his son’s empire. At the age of 20, Elvis got the contract of Sun Records, but Vernon did it on his behalf since his age wasn’t appropriate to do legal bindings.

Vernon managed a majority of Elvis’ affairs with Priscilla Presley in Graceland. The family has resided here since Elvis was 21 years old. Vernon used to accompany his son on the tours to handle the finances. In “Live A Little: Love A Little,” Vernon played a minor role alongside Presley. So, his career was thriving with Elvis in it.

Did Vernon Ever Marry Anyone Else?

Vernon Presley was quite a dedicated man who stayed married to Gladys and only her death at the age of 46 years in 1968 has made them apart. But after two years, he found love with his second wife Dee and they lived in a home together on the gorgeous Graceland estate.

When Did Elvis’s Dad Die?

Vernon has lived past his son’s death. In 1977, Elvis left the world leaving millions of fans in shock. But his father was most affected. He couldn’t take the loss of his son and in 1979, two years after Elvis’s death, Vernon had his sad demise due to a heart attack at the age of 63. After the death of the King, the Graceland estate was his father’s. And then when Vernon died, it was passed on to Lisa Marie Presley, the famed daughter of Elvis Presley.

The legend had a life that most may dream about, but there were secrets that could have been never revealed if Presley was alive. Vernon was a significant part of his son’s life and his death shattered him. Watching your love and son dying in front of the eyes was a bit too much for Vernon. He had always fulfilled his duties and tried to manage his son. But sadly, the death of Presley was the end of the legacy. So, Vernon will always be remembered as a loving and supportive father to Elvis Presley lovers.
