NFC West division rivals Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals squared off Friday night in the NFL’s Wild Card round to determine who advances to next week’s divisional round to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As the NFL postseason has arrived, the pressure to succeed has never been more significant. This is the third and final clash between two teams in the same division, so tensions are bound to rise.
Nfl Monday Night Football: Los Angeles Rams Beat The Arizona Cardinals
The NFL Monday Night Football game between the Cardinals’ Kyler Murray and the Rams’ Matthew Stafford was advertised as a tough matchup between two early-season MVP favorites. The Rams, though, breezed past Arizona with a 34-11 victory. The Rams had a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime. Matthew Stafford played in his first NFL playoff game throughout his 13-year career (the first 12 were spent as quarterback of the Detroit Lions).
As the Rams’ starting quarterback, he directed a dynamic offense and found wideout O’Dell Beckham for both of his team’s first-ever playoff touchdown passes (a four-yard pass which saw Beckham display his athletic ability by catching a jump ball). On a trick play, Beckham’s magical passing ability was put to use by Rams head coach Sean McVay. The receiver hauled in a lateral from Stafford and hit Cam Akers for 40 yards down the sideline.
Here’s what Beckham had to say about the big play:
“The opportunity came up. I know I got to someone who’s easily going to catch the ball. All I got to do is put it in the vicinity [to] Cam Akers, and he made the play.”
Cooper Kupp, one of the Rams’ top wideouts, also had a fantastic day, catching five passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Stafford was adequate, but neither Kyler Murray nor the Cardinals were. The former Heisman winner looked awkward and made significant mistakes throughout the evening. The second quarter was his worst. A sack of Murray seemed imminent as the Cardinals were backed up into their end zone.
Instead of running away from the pursuing defenders, he threw the ball, and Rams defensive back David Long picked it off and scored a touchdown from three yards out. As a result of this play, the Cardinals are down 21-0. All game long, Murray saw ghosts thanks to the pressure from Aaron Donald and the rest of the Rams’ defensive front seven.

Although Arizona was without great receiver DeAndre Hopkins (who suffered a ruptured MCL in Week 14), they did get a pass rusher, J.J. Watt, back from suspension. Watt. Watt made three tackles throughout the game (one for a loss). In the NFL playoffs, the Los Angeles Rams will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round the following week.
