iPhone 14 Battery Costs Rise Above Pre-Batterygate Levels

Although the pricing of the iPhone 14 hardware lineup is basically identical to what it was for the previous generation, the cost of changing the battery has increased significantly. It has now surpassed the prices that Apple was charging before the “Batterygate” investigation in 2016 and 2017.

Apple will charge $99 to replace the battery in any of the iPhone 14 models, which is an increase over the $69 fee that is charged for the iPhone 13, 12, 11, and X lines of products. The most recent iPhone SE, as well as iPhones in the eight series and older, cost $49 each. Costs at authorized Apple repair locations may differ from those listed above.

The prices shown above are for out-of-warranty and non-AppleCare+ replacements at Apple Stores. Apple’s AppleCare+ service will typically only replace a device’s battery if the battery health indicator is at 80 percent or lower. However, factors such as temperature, leaving the battery at a standard charge, and other factors can significantly diminish a battery’s lifespan.

Apple claims that its batteries are rated to survive 500 cycles before reaching 80 percent capacity, although these claims are subject to change. Although it is noteworthy that the cost of replacing a battery that is relatively comparable to the one found within the iPhone 13 has increased by 43 percent, the most recent price structure for Apple batteries represents somewhat of a corrective from an earlier, much-publicized divergence.

A battery replacement for an iPhone 6 or later model cost $79 until late 2017, when Apple’s quiet, undocumented habit of slowing down older phones went from a crowdsourced benchmark theory to an apology from Apple and, inevitably, a “Batterygate” moniker. Since then, battery replacements have been free for iPhone 6 and later models.

In addition to the unusual admission that it made a mistake, Apple has temporarily lowered the price of battery replacements that are not covered by a warranty or AppleCare to $29. This continued through 2018, but in 2019, Apple still offered a reduction of $10 off the original price of its new batteries, bringing the total cost down to $69.

This pricing remained in effect until the iPhone 14 was released. The company has also gradually introduced battery health information to iOS, providing owners with a glance at their maximum capacity and indicators of whether their system could be slowed down to accommodate lesser battery power – at least if you’ve installed a genuine Apple battery in your device.
