What Exactly is New York Fashion Week?

Twice a year in February and September, New York City plays host to the international fashion industry for a weeklong series of events known as New York Fashion Week (NYFW). It is one of the “Big 4” fashion weeks, together with those in Paris, London and Milan the four most important fashion weeks in the world.

Although other cities, such as London had been utilizing their city’s name in conjunction with the terms “fashion week” as early as the 1980s, the contemporary concept of a centralized “New York Fashion Week” was founded by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 1993. The inspiration for New York Fashion Week came from “Press Week,” a series of events that began in 1943.

The CFDA obtained Ruth Finley’s calendar, which lists activities happening around the city (not just those associated with WME/IMG). New York Fashion Week is expected to generate $887 million for the city’s economy.
