Meghan Markle Wore Earrings Given to Her by Queen Elizabeth

Meghan Markle has added some bling to her outfit in homage to the Queen. On Wednesday, as the Queen’s casket was ceremonially carried through the streets of London, the Duchess of Sussex, then 41 years old donned a set of pearl and diamond drop earrings that had been gifted to her by the late monarch.

Meghan’s exquisite earring was evident as she faced straight ahead in the car as they traveled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall with Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The Queen has been known to lend and give jewelry to female relatives, and in 2018, she gave Meghan a pair of pearl and diamond earrings for their first public appearance together.

After marrying Prince Harry, Meghan spent her first month as Duchess of Sussex traveling with the Queen on the royal train to Cheshire, a town about 200 miles from London, where they met with local officials and saw a school performance.

The monarch was well-known for her love of pearl jewelry and the pair she gave to Meghan Markle appears to be a miniature duplicate of one of her own favorite sets.

For Wednesday’s coffin procession and service, Kate Middleton wore a similar tribute, fastening a pearl shamrock brooch that once belonged to the Queen onto her all-black costume as a nod to the Irish heritage of the late royal. The deceased grandmother-in-law received the glistening clip during a trip to South Korea in 1999.

Since the new Princess of Wales is the second-highest ranked female member of the royal family she and Queen Camilla drove in a separate car. There was a procession through London, and among those who participated were King Charles III, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Men walked with Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, Anne’s son Peter Phillips, Anne’s husband Sir Tim Laurence, the Queen’s cousin Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester and the Queen’s nephew David Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon.

People waited in long lines to see the cortege carrying the Queen’s body through town. The casket was flown in from Scotland on Tuesday evening, where the queen reportedly passed away “peacefully” on September 8 at the age of 96.

Wednesday it was taken from the palace to Westminster Hall, where it will lie in state for five days with public viewing available around the clock.

Until the state funeral of the Queen on Monday September 19 which will be attended by diplomats and dignitaries from around the world, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to pass through to pay their respects.
