According to a Tuesday announcement from AdventHealth, a hospital network with four locations in the western suburbs, the University of Chicago Medicine intends to purchase a stake in the organization. The Great Lakes Region of AdventHealth, which comprises facilities in Bolingbrook, Glendale Heights, Hinsdale, and La Grange, would be acquired by UChicago Medicine as part of the plan. The acquisition might occur this year or early the following year depending on regulatory permissions. AdventHealth would keep a stake in the area and oversee the hospitals’ daily operations. Ashley Heher, a spokeswoman for UChicago Medicine, declined to give the purchase price on Tuesday.
The announcement comes after AdventHealth departed from Ascension earlier this year. The two had run Amita Health as a joint venture for many years. The hospital’s University of Chicago Medical Center and Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey are part of the UChicago Medicine system. According to a statement from the plans, the union would improve access to services for people in the western suburbs. The alliance is the most recent in a string of agreements that have seen hospitals in Illinois team up with others, frequently to benefit from economies of scale, reach more patients, and adapt to emerging technologies. Hospitals often claim they can provide better treatment at lower costs by joining forces. However, these alliances frequently give them more negotiating power with insurance companies.

UChicago Medicine Opening Outpatient Clinic Inside Former Shore Bank Home In Kenwood
According to UChicago administrators, the clinic would run with a small staff of doctors seeing 60–90 patients daily. When Shore Bank failed in 2010, UChicago acquired the property in 2019. KENWOOD — UChicago Medicine is pursuing plans to establish a similar facility a few blocks away while Northwestern Medicine prepares to open a $100 million clinic near Bronzeville. In a 13,000-square-foot building that has been restored, UChicago Medicine is opening an outpatient clinic at 4658 S. Drexel Boulevard was purchased by the medical institution in 2019. Leslie Stern, president of UChicago Medicine, went over the details of the proposals at a recent meeting of the North Kenwood Oakland Advisory Council Development.
The facility would provide a full range of services, including paediatrics, women’s health, and senior care. According to Stern, the latter will provide wraparound services through UChicago Medicine’s Primary Care Plus program. According to Stern, six to eight doctors would see 60 to 90 patients daily, a combination of new patients and transfers from the hospital’s on-campus clinic, which has had trouble keeping up with demand. The business would be open from 8 am until 6 pm. Monday through Friday and 8 am to noon on Saturday; Stern said these hours might be increased at the community’s request.
Urgent care won’t be provided. According to Stern, the clinic directors will collaborate with a local urgent care facility. According to Stern, UChicago wants to hire 10 to 15 staff from the neighbourhood and construction could start early in 2019 when the project passes the zoning procedure, and it might be finished and open by June. According to Ben Gibson, vice president of government affairs at UChicago Medicine, “this additional location will allow us to treat patients more swiftly and easily because our on-campus clinic is experiencing capacity issues.”
Formerly located on Drexel Boulevard, Shore Bank was a Black-owned community development bank that filed for bankruptcy in 2010. According to UChicago officials, the building had a complete renovation in 2020, including a new storefront, roof, and landscaping. North of the property, an empty lot was replaced with a parking lot, and a stormwater retention system was installed underground. Officials stated that only interior work is still needed.
According to UChicago spokesman Ashley Heher, the project is still in its early phases. Thus it is impossible to predict how much it will ultimately cost. Since officials are not recommending building the facility, the medical center does not require permission from the Illinois Health Services and Review Board, according to Heather. Following the city’s approval of Northwestern Medicine’s proposal to establish an outpatient facility less than a mile away, working in tandem with religiously based community organizations like Bright Star Community Outreach to determine the needs of the region, the move was made a few months later. According to hospital officials, Northwestern hopes to commence ground this summer and open as early as mid-2025.
According to Stern, the City Council’s zoning committee might hear the UChicago Medicine project as early as October. Subscribe to Block Club Chicago, a 501(c)(3) newsroom managed by independent journalists. Every dollar we earn goes toward supporting neighbourhood reporting in Chicago.
