In a civil lawsuit filed on Wednesday New York Attorney General Letitia James accused former President Donald Trump of huge fraud. This came after a three-year investigation into the finances of the family business.
James said that Trump “falsely inflated his wealth by billions of dollars” to make himself and his family richer.
“There aren’t two sets of laws for people in this nation,” James said. “Former presidents must be held to the same standards as everyday Americans.”
James said that she had told the IRS and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan about some of the allegations.
Last month, during a deposition that was part of James’ civil fraud investigation into the Trump Organization’s finances, Trump used the Fifth Amendment more than once.
Trump’s attempt to protect himself from possible criminal charges was similar to what he said during a 2016 campaign stop, when he said that people who use their constitutional right not to incriminate themselves are like mobsters. “The mob takes the Fifth. If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”
Today, I filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump for engaging in years of financial fraud to enrich himself, his family, and the Trump Organization.

James’s investigation began more than three years ago, after former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen told federal lawmakers that the former president often lied about how much his properties were worth and how much money he had in order to get better insurance and loan rates.
In May, the attorney general said that the investigation was almost over and that investigators had found a lot of evidence that could be used to support legal action against Trump, his company or both.
The action of the attorney general is part of one of the many investigations into the former president. Trump is currently fighting against the seizure of classified documents from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. This is part of a federal investigation into possible obstruction, mishandling of government records, and Espionage Act violations.
A federal grand jury is also looking into attempts to change the results of the 2020 election. Former Trump administration officials have been asked to testify before the grand jury.
And in Atlanta, a local district attorney is doing a wide-ranging criminal investigation that includes Trump’s attempts to put pressure on Georgia officials to stop President Joe Biden from winning there in 2020. So far, more than a dozen people, including Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, have been told that they are under investigation.
