The Danish Royal Court says that Queen Margrethe of Denmark tested positive for COVID-19 a few days after going to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth.
“HM The Queen tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday evening and is now residing at Fredensborg Palace,” according to a statement on the palace’s website on Wednesday. “The Queen’s activities this week have thus been canceled.”
According to Reuters, Queen Margrethe who is 82 has mild symptoms. In February of this year the Danish monarch tested positive for the virus and also had mild symptoms. The BBC said that she has been given a vaccine against COVID.
Margrethe was one of 2,000 people who attended the state funeral of the British monarch at London’s Westminster Abbey on Monday. She also went to the smaller committal service at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel. Her son, Crown Prince Frederik went with her.
According to the outlet, the Danish Queen was Queen Victoria’s third cousin once removed. Margrethe sat in the first row of the church in the same section as European monarchs like Prince Albert II of Monaco, King Philippe of Belgium and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
The day before the funeral Queen Margrethe went to Westminster Hall to pay her respects to Queen Elizabeth while she was lying in state.
Since Queen Elizabeth died, Queen Margrethe has been in power longer than any other European leader. In 1972 when her father, King Frederick IX, died, she became the first woman to rule Denmark. She was 32 years old.
This year is Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee which means she has been on the throne for 50 years. But she cut back on the events planned for the weekend after September 8 when Queen Elizabeth died. On September 10 Queen Margrethe led a minute of silence at a gala at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen to honor Queen Elizabeth.
Margrethe is also the only female ruler in Europe. The BBC says that after King Charles III’s mother died Queen Margrethe sent him a letter expressing her sorrow.
“She was a towering figure among European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all,” she wrote.
