Sony made the announcement yesterday that the next PlayStation VR 2 would not be able to play games from the original PlayStation VR. This will ultimately separate the two systems and restrict access to a library of fun that is only compatible with the older technology.
Why? Sony had this to say in announcing the news:
According to Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience for Sony, “PlayStation VR games are not compatible with PlayStation VR2 since PlayStation VR2 is designed to be a truly next-generation virtual reality experience.” PlayStation VR2 was released in October 2016. “PlayStation VR2 offers significantly more sophisticated features, such as an all-new controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as I’ve indicated, and inside-out tracking built into it.
Additionally, 3D audio is coming together, 4K HDR, of course, and so onto, to create games for the PlayStation VR2, a completely different strategy than the one used for the original PlayStation VR is required. These capabilities make it possible for developers to construct environments with a sense of more vibrancy and life, bringing gamers much closer to the action than ever before. I have faith in that.”
