Nirvana’s main vocalist Kurt Cobain died on April 5, 1994. Using a 20-gauge shotgun, the musician shot himself in the head at his Seattle residence. He left a suicide note behind Courtney Love, his wife, and Frances Bean Cobain, his daughter.
Kurt Cobain’s passing stunned the music industry and grieved numerous admirers. There are scant details about what happened before Kurt Cobain’s death, even if many aspects of his death are still unclear.
Kurt’s Troubled Life
On February 20, 1967, Kurt Cobain was born in Aberdeen, Washington. The teenage artist began listening to punk music after dropping out of high school. Together with Dale Crover and Greg Hokanson, former Melvins members, Kurt Cobain founded the group Fecal Matter in 1985.
After the band eventually split up, Kurt Cobain founded Nirvana with Krist Novoselic, another punk rock fan. Imagine Nirvana in their commercial zenith, when they were hailed as the “flagship band of Generation X.” Kurt Cobain detested the spotlight despite leading one of the most influential bands in the 1990s.
He resorted to using narcotics and alcohol to treat his bipolar disease, ADHD, and depression. The guitarist also experienced excruciating discomfort from an unidentified chronic gastrointestinal disease and bronchitis.
Cobain’s First Suicide Attempt
In his later years, Kurt Cobain frequently took heroin and inhalants. The musician overdosed on Rohypnol in March 1994. He was also drinking a lot at the same time, so it was hazardous. Courtney Love would eventually regard this as his first suicide attempt.
Love would plan a meeting with Cobain’s buddies for an intervention. After first refusing, Cobain decided to participate in a detox treatment at a Recovery Center in Los Angeles. The personnel at this facility were unaware of Cobain’s depression or suicidal tendencies and did not think he was depressed.
Days were spent discussing his issues, drug use, and enjoying playing with his daughter, Frances. By the end of March, Cobain had jumped the rehab’s wall and gotten away.
How Old Was Kurt Cobain When He Died?
Kurt Cobain belonged to the famed 27 Club because he was 27 years old when he passed away.
Days Surrounding His Death
On April 2, Cobain purchased ammunition while informing the cab driver that he had just experienced a break-in. After three days, Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Three days later, on April 8, an electrician installing security lighting at Kurt Cobain’s Washington home discovered the musician’s body.
A suicide letter written to Boddah, Cobain’s imaginary companion from boyhood, was found close by. In the note, he wrote that it had been “too many years now” since he had “felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, combined with actually writing.”
According to the toxicological testing, Kurt’s bloodstream had a significant level of valium. As this was going on, reports of Nirvana’s breakup spread swiftly, forcing the band to withdraw from the 1994 Lollapalooza roster.
On April 10, 1994, a vigil was held in a park near Seattle Center.
At the memorial, excerpts from his suicide note were aired. Near the vigil’s end, Love arrived and distributed some of Cobain’s clothing among the guests. According to Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, the news of Cobain’s passing was “perhaps the worst thing that has happened to me in my life.”
Love and Tract Marander (Cobain’s ex-girlfriend about whom “About a Girl” was written), who attended the ceremony Cobain’s mother organized for him on May 31, 1999, said their final goodbyes. Frances, Kurt’s daughter, threw his ashes into McLane Creek.
Many artists were shocked when he passed away. “I never knew Cobain to be suicidal,” said longtime-friend Mark Lanegan. “I just knew he was going through a tough time.”
Searching For The Truth
Unfortunately, many people think his death wasn’t suicided because of how bad the scenario was. Following Kurt Cobain’s untimely passing, several rumors have been circulated, most of which center on Courtney Love.
Love hired Tom Grant, a private detective, and Grant thinks Love was murdered. According to Grant, the circumstances surrounding Cobain’s suicide were “packed with lies, logical fallacies, and innumerable discrepancies.” From the filmmaker, Nick Broomfield comes yet another conspiracy hypothesis.
Eldon “El Duce” Hoke, the bandleader of The Mentors, alleged that Love had offered him $50,000 to assassinate Cobain in an interview with Broomfield for his film Kurt & Courtney.
In the end, Broomfield came to terms with the notion that Cobain had killed himself. Journalists Ian Halperin and Max Wallace made the same decision as Broomfield to look into their theory.
Who Killed Kurt Cobain? and Love and Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain are the two books that were published. The two agreed that Love was motivated even if there wasn’t enough proof to show wrongdoing.
Friends and Family Still Unsure
According to several other friends and family members, Cobain wouldn’t have done this time himself. Love’s father, Hank Harrison, and Kim Gordon of the musical group Sonic Youth have expressed reservations regarding his passing.
Gordon told Uncut Magazine in 2005 Kurt died horribly. Not just an OD, either. He violently ended his own life. Gordon said, “It was so aggressive, and he wasn’t an aggressive person; he was brilliant and had fantastic intelligence.”
Others, including Danny Goldberg, a former Nirvana manager, criticized the notions. “It’s ridiculous,” Goldberg told The Guardian in 2015. “He killed himself. I saw him the week beforehand. He was depressed.”
“He tried to kill himself six weeks earlier. He’d talked and written about suicide, he was on drugs, he got a gun,” Goldberg said. Despite the ambiguity surrounding Kurt Cobain’s passing, millions have been and continue to be inspired by his music.
Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, was found dead in his Seattle home on April 8, 1994. He had died on April 5 from a gunshot wound to the head. The well-known singer, addicted to heroin and had mental health problems, was found by an electrician named Gary Smith, who had come to install a security system.
