Shanahan says he is to blame for putting Jimmy G in a “bad spot” on safety. Kyle Shanahan shared some of the blame for the play that might have been the difference in the 49ers’ 11-10 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football at Empower Field at Mile High.
Midway through the third quarter, with the 49ers leading 7-3, a San Francisco drive that started at their own 1-yard line ended in an untimely safety when Jimmy Garoppolo stepped out of the back of the end zone after getting pressure in the middle.
The next pass by Garoppolo was picked off, if not for safety, it would have been returned for a pick-six. Even though Garoppolo was the only one to blame for stepping out of the end zone, the 49ers coach got some blame for putting his quarterback in that position.
Safety for the Broncos!

“I mean, that was a tough situation I put him in, that unblocked guy coming,” Shanahan told reporters postgame. “Wish we’d have time for the big play and could have ditched it, but it was a tough situation.”
Let’s just say it was a group effort, but in the worst possible way. The play changed how the game was going and in the end, the 49ers lost by one point to the Broncos. If it hadn’t been for the safety the 49ers might have won in Denver.
