Shakira to Stand Trial for Tax Fraud

Tuesday, a Spanish court told Shakira that she has to stand trial for tax fraud. If she is found guilty, she could spend more than 8 years in prison.

Shakira, who is 45 years old is accused of cheating the Spanish government out of $15 million in taxes from 2012 to 2014. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer says she only lived in Spain for less than half of each of those years.

A judge in Barcelona has now told her to come to court but no date has been set for the trial. The megastar turned down a plea deal earlier this year which means she could get 8 years and 2 months in prison and a fine of 24 million euros if she is found guilty.

In a statement, people who work for Shakira said they were confident in her case.

“Shakira has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and globally recognized tax firm,” the representative said.

“Unfortunately, the Spanish Tax Office, which loses one out of every two lawsuits with its taxpayers, continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another baseless case. Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process,” the statement continued.

The supposed fraud happened during her 11-year relationship with Gerard Pique, a professional soccer player for Barcelona.

Although they are no longer together the couple shares custody of their two children since June. Shakira is from Colombia and she has already given the Spanish government the $15 million she owed them.
