When in the Star Wars Universe Does “Andor” Take Place?

In a galaxy far, far away that keeps growing in no particular order, it can be hard to figure out where new stories take place. Even more so when the world has its way of keeping track of time that is hard to translate to the real world. But Disney always makes sure to tell people what they need to know.

Cassian Andor played by Diego Luna is the main character in Andor. Fans will recognise him from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Even though a well-known character can help place a series in the big picture, that is not the only thing in this case.

In the first scene of this new Star Wars story, a title card tells the audience that it is the year 5 BBY. Of course, knowing what that means is a whole different thing. But once you understand how the system works it’s easy to see how things fit into the timeline.

What’s BBY?

To understand the date you need to know what the abbreviation “BBY” means. Before the Battle of Yavin is what it means. In the Star Wars universe this event is used to measure dates. So after every date, BBY or ABY will come (after the Battle of Yavin).

Two things make this the middle of the timeline. One, it was a turning point in the Star Wars universe. And two all fans know about it even if they don’t know it. The Battle of Yavin happens in Star Wars: A New Hope, the first movie in the series.

It is sometimes called the Battle of the Death Star a better name. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who is leading the rebels wins the battle when he destroys the Death Star. The name Yavin comes from the system where the battle that gave it its name took place. The rebel base from which the heroes took off was on a moon called Yavin 4, so there are many reasons why Yavin was chosen.

Andor takes place five years before these events. This gives a general idea of how long it has been since the original trilogy and how long it has been since the prequels. Even that little bit is a big help, to be honest. But many Star Wars stories take place in that time now, so where does Andor fit in?

When Does Andor Occur in Relation to Rogue One?

Since they both have the same main character, it’s clear that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the most similar to the new show. The events of Rogue One happen in 0 BBY, which means that Andor starts five years before Cassian is introduced to the galaxy for the first time.

Cassian has a long way to go before becoming the passionate rebel from Rogue One and this series will show that journey. With a second season of the show already confirmed, it’s not clear how much time the Andor series will cover, but it will be within the five-year window before Rogue One.

5 BBY is also the last time Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, sees Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker, before Rogue One. Their relationship is what starts Rogue One and brings Jyn and Cassian together.

The Andor trailer features Saw Gerrera, but since he and Jyn have fallen out of favour, she will not be appearing beside him.

When Do the Other Events of Star Wars Happen?

Obi-Wan Kenobi, the last Star Wars show to come out on Disney+ takes place four years before Andor, in the year 9 BBY. This is important to know if you want to know how Andor fits in with other shows.

In the series, Ewan McGregor’s character is trying to save people all over the galaxy. Even though it’s unlikely that the two series will connect because Kenobi has to stay alone, it does show how powerful the Empire is in the years around Andor.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is another story in the Star Wars universe that takes place around this time. The year is not clear, but Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) should be around 10 BBY based on his age.

A little farther from Andor than Obi-Wan Kenobi, but still not too far. Again, it’s unlikely that any of the events or characters will happen simultaneously, but it gives a sense of the bigger world of Andor and the place where Cassian has grown up. Andor airs simultaneously as the animated show Star Wars: Rebels.

At the same time that Cassian joins the rebellion, the young thief Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) is joining the Ghost’s crew somewhere in the galaxy’s far reaches. This link also helps us figure out where the rebellion is when Andor is alive. Star Wars: Rebels shows that the rebellion is in its early stages.

Since the Empire came to power 14 years ago, the rebels are still learning to work together and organise themselves, but they are making progress. Even though they are small, it won’t be long before they are a real threat to the Empire.

As the series continues Andor will probably tell more about how the rebellion started. This means more people you know. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), like Saw Gerrera, will be in the series, as will other rebel leaders.

When Do Cassian Andor’s Memories Take Place?

There are flashbacks to Cassian’s childhood in the first three episodes of Andor. The date isn’t given outright, but based on what we know about Cassian, it’s not hard to figure out when it happened.

Cassian should be 26 in Rogue One, making him 21 in Andor. Based on how young Cassian, or Kassa (Antonio Via) looks, he is about 11 years old. This means that the flashbacks happen 10 years before the main series. This puts the flashbacks around 15 BBY, but Cassian’s age may have been changed for the show, since some of the details in Rogue One don’t match up.

With only three episodes out so far, there isn’t much to go on, so Tony Gilroy, who created Andor, may reveal more in the series. Fans will have to wait until then for another episode to come out on Disney+.
