Johnny Depp and guitarist Jeff Beck played together at a concert in Washington, D.C. just over four months after the end of his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard in Virginia.
Depp and Beck released an album together over the summer. On Tuesday night at The Anthem they started their U.S. tour which will last until November and include stops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville and other cities. Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew two of his lawyers from the Fairfax, Virginia, trial, went to the show and posed for pictures backstage while wearing VIP passes.
On June 1, the jury mostly agreed with Depp, who is 59 years old and gave him more than $10 million in damages. They found that Heard, who is 36 years old, lied about him in her 2018 article about domestic abuse, even though she didn’t name him. Heard also won one of her counterclaims for defamation and was given $2 million in damages. They both want to change the decisions.
Some of the die-hard Depp fans who went to the court case earlier this year also came to the rock show on Tuesday. Jhoane Garcia often went to court and he says that the concert felt like a reunion of Johnny Depp fans who had met at the courthouse.
“It was great coming here. It felt like a reunion. I saw so many people from the trial. I felt like it was just family being with them again. We were together for six weeks. We went through a lot and we saw Johnny go through a lot as well,” she tells. “And I was so glad to see Camille and Ben and we all felt really close to each other for some reason, a special connection with each other.”
Beck played the first 45 minutes of the show after the opening act, Desure who told the crowd that he met Johnny Depp in a tattoo parlor. Desure said that Depp heard his music at some point and asked him to open for them. He thanked the actor and Beck for letting him join the tour. When Depp came out for the second half of his set, the crowd went crazy. The actor from Pirates of the Caribbean bowed to the crowd and pointed in the direction of Beck. Then he walked over to Beck bowed to him and started playing his guitar.
“I get to play with these guys; somehow weird, but amazing,” Depp said after playing his first few songs with Beck. “I want to say thank you to a lot of people who are in this room.” Between the songs he sang lead vocals on, Depp didn’t say much more, but that didn’t stop some of his female fans from throwing underwear and bras onto the stage during the last song.
Last month, sources confirmed that Depp is dating lawyer Joelle Rich, who represented him in his libel case in the U.K. in 2020.
In August, Depp was part of MTV’s 2022 Video Music Awards show. His face was digitally added to the Moon Person’s helmet in a pre-recorded cameo. Heard’s sister, Whitney Henriquez, spoke out against MTV for letting him appear. She said that the organisers were “disgusting and clearly desperate”
