Daredevil Cameo in She-hulk Makes Up for Marvel’s Missed Opportunity

Even though Daredevil’s new appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is very exciting, it brings to light the fact that Marvel Comics has mostly failed. Jennifer Walters and Matthew Murdock have a fight before they join forces, which is how most heroes team up.

However, they quickly get along as heroes because they are both lawyers by day. But this super-logical pairing has happened in comics a lot less than you might think.

In episode 8 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jennifer Walters has no choice but to represent a client named Leapfrog. Leapfrog is suing for damages because he thinks Jennifer’s tailor, Luke Jacobson, made him a bad super suit.

In this case, Matthew Murdock also known as Daredevil is representing Jacobson. After Luke’s case was easily won, Murdock went out for drinks with Walters, and the two started getting along very well. Also, when Leapfrog kidnaps Luke and forces him to make a new suit, Daredevil and She-Hulk have a classic fight that turns into a team-up.

But once the day is saved, Matt and Jen give in to their feelings for each other and have a one-night stand, which could easily lead to more in the future of the MCU.

Even though this kind of relationship between Daredevil and She-Hulk makes a lot of sense, they haven’t really talked to each other much in the comics. The most famous time She-Hulk and Daredevil worked together in the 42 years since She-first Hulk’s appearance and since the two heroes have lived in the same universe was in 2014’s She-Hulk #8-10, written by Charles Soule and drawn by Javier Pulido.

When Captain America went to court for the first time, he asked Jennifer to represent him in a wrongful death case and asked Matt to be the other side’s lawyer. Eventually, the three of them worked together to stop the bad guy who was behind it all.

Other than that, the only other important things happened earlier in the same series by Soule (which set up She-future Hulk’s court battle representing Captain America) and in a later comic where Matt needs Jennifer’s advice on a legal brief while they are having drinks.

Everything else is either a short one-panel scene or a big crossover where they are both there but don’t talk or spend time together.

MCU showed Marvel Comics What They Missed

One would think that Marvel’s resident lawyers/superheroes would work together and talk to each other a lot, but the MCU shows how much the two have missed out on in the comics. Jen and Matt fight in court right away, get into a fight, join forces and have a brief romance on screen. All of these things could have happened much more on the page.

Even though She-Hulk and Daredevil don’t have to have an ongoing team-up series, which is probably something Marvel Comics is now thinking about, it’s strange that they haven’t spent much time together, especially after She-MCU Hulk’s series showed how entertaining it can be.

Daredevil’s guest role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, whether in court or in costume, makes up for the weird failure of their very limited relationship in the original comics.
