From being frozen in the made-up carbonite to being stuck in bread? Han Solo, the famous scoundrel from “Star Wars,” is in another sticky situation and this one is even worse than the last.
One House Bakery in Benicia, California, has made a life-size replica of a frozen Han Solo out of bread dough. This is similar to what happened to Harrison Ford’s character at the end of “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” in 1980.
“Pan Solo has been encased in levainite ☺️😉… we’re giant nerds!” One House Bakery said in an Instagram post on Sunday.
The bakery said that the bread sculpture was made for a scarecrow contest in the area. Hannalee Pervan, who is also a co-owner of One House and its head baker, and her mother Catherine Pervan, who is also a co-owner and the bakery’s chocolatier, made Pan Solo.
“We’re super fan girls when it comes to science fiction, and the Star Wars franchise obviously is just so iconic,” Catherine stated USA TODAY, adding that Han Solo frozen in carbonite is “an image everybody knows, and I don’t think anyone’s ever done it out of bread.”

Three months ago, the two started making plans for their project. “Then it took about a month of working after hours,” Hannalee said, noting that they worked for several hours each night after the bakery closed to build the 6-foot structure.
The Pervans said that they first used plywood and a Harrison Ford mask to get the proportions of the body right. Then, they made and baked many layers of dough to make Pan Solo’s body and details.
“Dead dough,” which doesn’t have yeast, is used to make Pan Solo. Aside from that, he’s just a mix of flour, water, and sugar.
Hannalee said with a laugh, “You could eat it.” “It’s just that it would taste awful now because we painted it (so birds and squirrels wouldn’t eat Pan Solo).” During the process, Hannalee was also used as a model for Pan’s body.
“I’m basically the same height as (Harrison Ford),” she said. “So I just laid down… It was like 11 o’clock at night (and) I was like, ‘Just trace me this is gonna work.'” Hannalee and Catherine said that Pan Solo will be in front of One House Bakery until after Halloween.
“People come by day and night,” Catherine said. “We have a camera outside so we can see people here at like 1 or 2 a.m.” People have been taking pictures, smelling the building, and poking it. “The response has been just crazy, people are fascinated by it,” Catherine added.

Pan Solo is part of Benicia’s annual Scarecrow Contest. During the month of October, downtown businesses put up “scarecrows” as part of this event. This year, visitors have until Oct. 23 to vote for their favorite.
Hannalee and Catherine Pervan put in a lot of effort. And this isn’t the first time that One House Bakery has come up with creative, bready replicas for the contest that are impressive.
In 2020, the bakery made “Pain-dough-lorian,” along with “baby dough-da” and a “pandroid.” And last year, they made “Dough-ki,” which was based on Loki the Alligator from Marvel Comics.
