Why Did Criston Cole Kill Joffrey Reunion In House Of The Dragon?

After Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) murders Joffrey Lonmouth at the reception for Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate), he flees the scene (Solly McLeod). Criston, overcome with guilt and jealousy, kneels beside the sacred Weirwood tree in the Red Keep and considers taking his own life.

In the last moments of Episode 5, Queen Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) stops him from following through. If she knows it’s wrong, why does she keep doing it? Alicent probably views Criston as a victim of the Targaryen princess’s duplicity, thus that’s why she feels bad for him.

In the novellas written before the main series, we learn that Alicent and Criston form an alliance not out of love but out of mutual animosity.

Does Ser Chester Cole End Up Romantically Involved With Queen Altaira Tower?

In Episode 4, Rhaenyra’s lies get Alicent’s dad, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), thrown out of court, despite the fact that the queen begs her husband to show mercy. Alicent engages in social warfare against her old friend House Hightower by wearing House Hightower green at Rhaenyra’s wedding reception after learning that Rhaenyra did, in fact, lose her virginity. Alicent and Criston both attribute their problems to Rhaenyra.

Is it possible that Alicent and Criston may form a friendship over their mutual dislike? In a strictly platonic sense, absolutely. Prequel passages show that Alicent and Criston are still working together to overthrow Rhaenyra and her heirs.

Neither one of them wants to have s*xual relations, and they both have warped views of virtue and morals that don’t allow them to breach their vows but do allow them to break the law. Both are fixated on breaking the rules in order to protect the traditions of King’s Landing, Rhaenyra, and both are willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals.

Furthermore, what drives him over the line is Rhaenyra’s decision to keep Criston as her sidepiece instead of rushing off with him to Essos and telling everyone the truth about her marriage to Laenor Velaryon.

Criston took his vow to remain chaste seriously as a member of the Kingsguard, so when Joffrey teased him about Laenor and Rhaenyra’s agreement to have s*x with whoever they wanted behind their lovers’ backs, Criston lost his temper and beat the Knight of the Kisses to a pulp in front of their respective partners.

When Will Ser Criston Cola And Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen Be Back Together?

The romance in House of the Dragon isn’t anything out of a fairy tale. The family story features brutal violence, political intrigue, and the occasional dragon. When one is preoccupied with the demise of one’s foes, there is little time for romantic pursuits.

Episode 5 concludes the love tale between Rhaenyra and Criston and, assuming House of the Dragon stays true to its source material, any potential romance between Alicent and Rhaenyra or Alicent and Criston as well.

Criston’s anger toward Rhaenyra after she rejects his proposal to desert the crown and be his runaway bride never quits in the prequel texts. As a matter of fact, it poisons his heart even more.

Final Thoughts

Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s resentment of Criston grows as he kills the boyfriend of her husband, further straining her relationship with Laenor. After this point, the protagonists of House of the Dragon will only flirt with power.
