Families, both immediate and extended, can both frustrate and enrich our lives. Give those you care about a call, treat them to lunch, or write them a message to let them know they’re on your mind today.
When is National Family Day 2023?
On this national holiday, we honor both our biological families and the families we’ve chosen via our friends and partners.
History of National Family Day
It’s impossible to imagine a human society without a family unit. The family consists of spouses, children, and in-laws, as well as biological relatives such as parents, siblings, grandparents, and cousins. Family dynamics, social norms, and expectations change throughout time and among cultures.
The median age of a bride in the United States is now 28. Most households in the West consist of a single nuclear family, usually made up of parents and their minor children. There is a common expectation that adult children will take care of their ageing parents and other relatives in various cultures where extended families live together.
There has been a gradual expansion of the concept of “family” over time to include not only nuclear families but also extended families, clans, and even close-knit friendship groupings. “Chosen family” fills the emotional void left by a lack of contact with one’s biological family.
Beginning in the late 19th century, research into families became a distinct branch of sociology in the 1960s. Since then, researchers in the social sciences have paid close attention to families and how geography and culture shape individual behavior.
Changes in family dynamics have occurred rapidly in the wake of industrialization, globalisation, and the advent of low-cost, rapid-transit international transportation. Psychologists agree that close relationships with one’s family are essential to a person’s well-being.
According to studies, the quality of one’s connections with one’s family members significantly affects one’s happiness. Connecting with loved ones can help us deal with difficult situations, heal from trauma, and feel better about ourselves.
It is only fitting that we set aside a special day to focus on celebrating and spending time with our loved ones, as families are the backbone of societies all over the world.
Traditions of the Day
There is no definition of “family” that precludes extended relationships outside of the nuclear family. The term “family” can refer to a wide variety of people and creatures. The day is filled with family traditions like game nights, squabbling over nothing, inside jokes, visits to favorite restaurants and parks, and movie or home video marathons.
The unique customs that only your family celebrates. Loving each other deeply is the most important thing. There have been many fictitious characters that have filled the role of extended family in our lives.
Many of us have grown up with characters like Harry Potter and Ted Mosby, who is on a lifelong quest to find his true love in “How I Met Your Mother,” and these fictional people have become like family to us as they have guided us through difficult times. Those who are lonely or have no relatives often take comfort in these figures.
