Sosuke Aizen, a villain that many Bleach fans may have forgotten was imprisoned beneath the Soul Society headquarters, finally returned in episode 6 of Bleach: The Young Black Wind, titled “The Fire.” After Sosuke Aizen’s unusual encounter with Yhwach, viewers are again wondering as to how the villain wound up in prison and what powers he possesses.

Bleach TYBW Sees the Return of Sosuke Aizen

The actual Yhwach had invaded the Central Great Underground Prison while Stern Ritter Y-Yourself, Royd Lloyd, was impersonating him in the duel with Head Captain Yamamoto. Yhwach has broken into the First Division prison beneath the barracks to meet with Sosuke Aizen. Aizen, who isn’t just tied to a massive rock but also impaled on it, claims he has “many ways of finding out your name,” but adds, “I didn’t imagine I would get to see you with my own eyes.”

In exchange for his freedom, Yhwach offers Aizen the opportunity to join his army and help destroy the Soul Society. “I can’t stand to see the Quincy King walking in the path of a Soul Reaper,” he says. In light of Yhwach’s admission that Aizen’s abilities pose a threat to his ultimate purpose, Aizen concedes that the two may be headed in the same direction.

What Happened to Sosuke Aizen Prior to TYBW?

Our last encounter with Sosuke Aizen was during the Fake Karakura Town storyline, when the antagonist and protagonist, Ichigo, engaged in a brutal battle. As Aizen prepares to finish off Ichigo after a hard back-and-forth battle, Urahara arrives and activates a Kido spike, stopping the transformation in its tracks.

Aizen is put on trial by the Central 46 judges at the Soul Society 10 days after the battle, where he stands (or sits, as he is tied to a chair). The court hands down a sentence of 18,800 life terms in the maximum security wing of the Soul Society’s prison complex located beneath the First Division’s barracks.

Aizen laughs that the trial and the judges are a farce and that they have no legal standing to put him in jail for so long. The outburst prompted the judges to increase Aizen’s punishment from the original ten thousand to twenty thousand years and to bind his eye and mouth.
