Who is Dan Rather?

Journalist, commentator, and ex-anchor of American national evening newscasts Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. Although Rather began his career in Texas, it was his coverage of Hurricane Carla in September 1961 that made him a household name across the country.

In an unplanned move, Rather made history by superimposing a see-through map on top of a radar image of Hurricane Carla to make the first ever radar weather report. As a result of his first ever nationwide broadcast, 350,000 people were safely evacuated. He covered historical moments of monumental importance, including the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, 9/11, the Second Iraq War, and the War on Terror.

Famously, Rather covered the assassination of President John F. Kennedy from Dallas in November 1963. His reporting was so influential at CBS News that in 1964 he was given the position of White House correspondent.

Over the next two years, he worked as a foreign correspondent in London and Vietnam before returning to his post as a White House correspondent. He reported on Nixon’s presidency, from Nixon’s trip to China to the Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation.
