Jenna Ortega does a fine job as Wednesday Addams in the new Netflix series, but the show would have been stronger as a movie. Excellently portrayed by Jenna Ortega, who, as the character, does her best to convey a sense of detached morbidity.
The first season follows her as she enrolls in Nevermore Academy, the setting for the first meeting of her parents and the beginning of their romance. Almost immediately, she is drawn into a murder investigation, and as she pursues the monster, she uncovers long-lost family secrets.
That Jenna Ortega is in it is without a doubt the finest part. Taking on this part seems to have been a natural fit for her. It is obvious from her body of work that she is gifted, but her performance in this Netflix series is what swayed this review in its favor. She improves upon the script’s mediocrity and the story’s predictability by adding her own touches. We’d say she lights up the room, but maybe it’s more that she adds a touch of a mysterious darkness that somehow… works.
Everyone else in the cast is great as well; they make the best of a bad situation. Most of them were cast brilliantly, but there was one pick that never quite worked out and almost threw off the last few episodes. The students of Nevermore are one of the most peculiar aspects of this series. Changes and updates aren’t always negative, but when we think of the Addams Family, we see a peculiar family navigating a normal human environment.

It’s a big change from our norm to find out that the pupils at this school are werewolves, vampires, and sirens. As the killer’s monstrous nature is revealed in the pilot, this is crucial information, but it also makes Wednesday feel too much like Monster High. And speaking of monsters, by the time we see this thing at the first season’s finale, we can’t help but giggle at how absurd it is.
Maybe they were striving for goofy rather than terrifying so that younger viewers could also enjoy Wednesday, but when the monster is this obviously cartoonish, it’s hard to take it seriously. The option to make this less violent is analogous. It’s obvious they were going for a teen/tween demographic, but they missed a golden opportunity to appeal to a wider demographic by not expanding their target demographic.

The first season of Wednesday consists of eight episodes that may all be watched in one sitting because they range in length from 45 to 60 minutes apiece. However, the plot suffers from a lack of cohesion because there is so much information presented and so many potential directions to take.
This show really should have been a movie, with the extra storylines used in subsequent films. At least there are some beautiful things to look at in all of the episodes thanks to the set design and costumes. The story’s inherent predictability also contributes to its dragging nature. The entertainment value is high, however, largely due to Jenna Ortega’s stellar turn.
Overall Thoughts
Wednesday has enough charm to hold viewers’ attention throughout, despite the show’s occasionally frustrating complexity. The uniqueness of this offering is a testament to Jenna Ortega’s talent and future success. The show has a distinct Tim Burton vibe, which is a huge plus. All the beautiful directions, settings, and costumes may be attributed to him. The problem is more deeply rooted in the storyline and the choice to turn this into an ongoing series rather than a film.
