Tinseltown, November 14 (Reuters) – Documentary director and first lady of California, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, claimed in court on Monday that Harvey Weinstein raped her in 2005 when she was just starting in the entertainment industry.
Siebel Newsom, who testified in Los Angeles Superior Court, stated that she first met Weinstein, now 70 when she was 31 and had played in a few minor roles in films and television shows at the Toronto Film Festival.
She said that weeks later, in California, Weinstein requested her to meet him at The Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills for what she believed to be a business meeting. She claimed she was taken aback when she was told she would be meeting Weinstein, at the time one of Hollywood‘s most influential producers, in his hotel suite.
According to Siebel Newsom, Weinstein showed zero enthusiasm for talking about her work when she arrived. According to her, he walked into the toilet, called her over, and started masturbating in front of her before grabbing her breasts and acting “aggressively.”
“I was frightened. My purpose for visiting this site is not this, “She added, frequently choking up. I suddenly recalled actively attempting to retreat. Siebel Newsom claims that Weinstein dragged her onto a bed, but she doesn’t remember if he carried her.
She claims that he then raped her. She commented on how “large” he was and how “determined” he seemed. The situation was just terrible. Five years after becoming a symbol of the #MeToo movement, Harvey Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year jail sentence in New York for sex offenses.
After pleading not guilty to 11 counts of rape and s*xual assault, he is currently on trial in Los Angeles. Siebel Newsom is one of four women whose allegations form the basis of the Los Angeles charges brought against Weinstein.
Newsom was given the alias “Jane Doe 4” in court. The prosecution first claimed there were five witnesses. In October, an attorney for Siebel Newsom confirmed his client’s plans to testify. Weinstein’s lawyers have claimed that their client had only voluntary s*xual interactions and that his accusers are just actors who participated in a widespread culture of s*xual favors to further their careers.
Siebel Newsom claims that she did not notify her future husband, current California Governor Gavin Newsom, about the encounter with Weinstein until after the charges against Weinstein had already been made public.
On the other side, Weinstein’s lawyer Mark Werksman pressed Siebel Newsom for answers as to why her husband had accepted campaign contributions from the producer. She claimed that after telling the governor about the incident, he refunded the cash.
In February 2020, Weinstein, at 70 years old, was found guilty of sexual misconduct in New York. In July of 2021, he was extradited from New York to a facility in Los Angeles. Weinstein’s conviction and a 23-year prison sentence is currently being appealed in New York. If found guilty on all counts in Los Angeles, he faces a possible 140-year jail sentence.
