There Will Be Magpie Murders Season 2 Says Author Anthony Horowitz

A famous writer passes away under mysterious circumstances, and the final chapter of his just-finished novel goes missing. Magpie Murders, a new PBS series, is a mystery inside a mystery, as it focuses on the inquiry of Alan Conway’s murder while simultaneously attempting to answer the riddle of what happened in his last book.

Here’s the lowdown on the new series, which has been receiving rave reviews in the United Kingdom since its launch on BritBox earlier this year.

‘Magpie Murders’ Premieres October 16 on PBS

On Sunday, October 16 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS, after the premiere of Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2, the first episode of Magpie Murders will air. The six episodes will premiere once every week till November 20.

The unexpected death of Alan Conway raises two questions. Where did he go, and why didn’t he finish his newest novel? He has given his work to Susan Ryeland, his longtime editor and the person Alan most despised for discouraging him from tackling more difficult forms of writing. Unfortunately for Susan, the book ends abruptly since the final chapter is missing.

Susan starts looking into the mystery of the unpublishable project she has been working on. As she investigates Alan and his final novel, she learns that several of the characters were inspired by real persons from the 1950s era. Atticus Pünd, Alan’s fictitious investigator, seeks to solve the mystery in Magpie Murders as Susan searches for the missing final chapter.

The Cast of Magpie Murders Season 2

Oscar-nominee Susan, played by Lesley Manville, is one of the main characters in the film Magpie Murders. Former Game of Thrones actor Conleth Hill plays Alan. Atticus Pünd is played by Tim McMullen.

Michael Maloney, who plays Alan’s publisher Charles Clover, rounds out the cast. Susan’s brother Katie is played by Claire Rushbrook, while her boyfriend Andreas is played by Alexander Logothetis. Andreas and Katie both remember Alan from his days as a struggling teacher who hoped to one day become a great writer.

In Magpie Murders, several actors play multiple parts. In the present day, Daniel Mays portrays Detective Superintendent Locke, and in the sections of the plot taken from Alan’s book, Mays portrays the dimwitted D.I. Chubb. Alan’s fiance James Taylor (Pünd) and James Fraser (Alan) are both portrayed by Matthew Beard.

Both Claire and Clarissa, Alan’s less-than-successful sister and the sister of the novel’s murder victim, Sir Magnus Pyle, are portrayed by Pippa Haywood (Lorcan Cranitch).

Author Anthony Horowitz: He Hopes There’s a “Magpie Murders” Season 2

The television series Magpie Murders is based on Anthony Horowitz’s novel of the same name. He’s also interested in developing the second season of Magpie Murders based on the sequel he wrote, Moonflower Murders.

“Moonflower Murders, here we come,” Horowitz reportedly stated during a Q&A before the show’s U.K. premiere, as reported by RadioTimes. To the narrator, “As it happens, it has already been excellently narrated on audio by one Lesley Manville, and I am very, very hopeful. Excitement is building as I anticipate the beginning of work.

There has been no confirmation yet as to whether or not Magpie Murders will be renewed for a second season. Yet, it appears that the show’s success or failure in the United States may be a deciding factor. We’re waiting for transmission, for it to air on BritBox and PBS, said executive producer Jill Green. The investors are “extremely excited,” and we’re “very hoping” for approval.
